UTEP earns first win of 2026 season, beating Texas Southern 51-10

El Paso, Texas – The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Miners celebrated their first win of the 2026 college football season Saturday night, routing Texas Southern 51‑10 at the historic Sun Bowl. After a disappointing opening loss to Oklahoma, the Miners rebounded with a balanced attack that showcased both aerial precision and ground‑gaining power.

Offensive surge sparked by EJ Colson

Quarterback EJ Colson was the catalyst early, completing six of nine passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. Colson added a rushing touchdown, demonstrating the dual‑threat capability that the Miners have been cultivating all offseason. His poise under pressure helped UTEP establish a comfortable lead that the team never relinquished.

Ground game complements the passing attack

Running back Kam Thomas anchored the rushing effort, tallying 92 yards on the ground and a touchdown before halftime. Backup back Cash Cheeks contributed an additional 13 yards and his own rushing score, providing depth and confirming that the Miners can sustain drives through multiple ball carriers.

Defensive plays keep Texas Southern at bay

UTEP’s defense made a pivotal play when safety Esteban Guillory intercepted a Texas Southern pass in the second quarter, setting up another scoring opportunity for the Miners. The defense continued to apply pressure, limiting the opponent to 132 passing yards total and preventing any comeback attempts.

Game flow and final tally

Texas Southern managed 21 points through the first two quarters, but UTEP’s relentless offense answered each drive, ultimately amassing 51 points. The final score, 51‑10, reflects a dominant performance on both sides of the ball and moves the Miners to a 1‑1 record as they head into next week’s matchup.

Looking ahead

With the victory secured, UTEP will turn its focus to the upcoming game on the horizon, hoping to build momentum and improve its standing in the conference. Fans and alumni are encouraged to continue supporting the team as the season progresses.
