Detroit Lions restructure contracts of St. Brown and Sewell, freeing $35.7 M cap space

The Detroit Lions announced a major roster‑budget maneuver on Saturday, reshaping the contracts of two of their most productive players—wide receiver Amon‑Ra St. Brown and left tackle Penei Sewell. By converting portions of each player’s salary into signing bonuses and adding a void year to Sewell’s deal, the team generated approximately $35.68 million in cap space.

How the savings were created

According to Over The Cap and Spotrac, the Lions now sit second in the NFL with about $38 million in available cap space, a figure that can be carried over into the 2027 season. The savings break down as follows:

  • Sewell’s contract was restructured to convert $18.6 million of his salary into a signing bonus and to add a void year, freeing $14.8 million.
  • St. Brown’s deal saw $26 million of his salary shifted into a signing bonus, releasing an additional $20.8 million.

Both players remain under long‑term agreements. Sewell, a three‑time All‑Pro, signed a four‑year, $112 million extension in April 2024 with $85 million guaranteed. St. Brown, a two‑time All‑Pro, also signed a four‑year, $120 million extension in April 2024, guaranteeing $77 million.

What the cap space means for Detroit

With the newly created flexibility, the Lions have the freedom to explore in‑season moves before the trade deadline, a crucial period for teams looking to bolster depth or address injuries. Additionally, the extra space provides breathing room for the front office to negotiate extensions with emerging talent such as tight end Sam LaPorta and safety Brian Branch, both of whom have shown promise in recent seasons.

General manager Brad Holmes emphasized that the restructuring aligns with the organization’s long‑term strategy of building a competitive roster while maintaining fiscal responsibility. “Creating cap space now gives us the ability to act decisively when opportunities arise,” Holmes said in a statement.

Player performance highlights

Since being drafted in 2021, St. Brown has amassed 547 receptions for 6,252 yards and 44 touchdowns over 83 games, starting 75 of them. His reliable hands and route‑running have made him a cornerstone of Detroit’s passing attack.

Sewell, selected seventh overall in the 2021 draft, has started every one of his 83 games, anchoring an offensive line that has improved steadily under the coaching staff’s guidance. His presence has been pivotal in protecting quarterback Jared Goff and establishing the run game.

Looking ahead

The Lions’ cap maneuver comes at a time when the franchise is seeking to solidify its position as a playoff contender. By freeing up significant resources, Detroit can address roster needs, whether through trades, free‑agent signings, or extensions for home‑grown talent. Fans and analysts alike will be watching how the team leverages this flexibility as the season progresses.

For now, the restructuring underscores the Lions’ commitment to strategic roster management and signals an optimistic outlook for the organization’s financial health and on‑field competitiveness.
