Pieper High School holds sixth annual 9/11 stair‑climb tribute

On Friday, a solemn crowd assembled at Pieper High School in Kerrville to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The event, now in its sixth year, featured a stair‑climb in the school’s stadium that brought together students, families, first‑responders and local leaders.

Students lead the climb

Members of the school’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) were the centerpiece of the ceremony. Wearing name tags that displayed the names of individuals who perished on 9/11, the cadets walked more than 2,000 steps up and down the bleacher stairs. Their deliberate pace and quiet determination underscored the personal connection many in the community feel to the tragedy.

First‑responders stand in solidarity

Firefighters from the Kerrville Fire Department arrived in full uniform, joining the cadets on the bleachers. Their presence highlighted the ongoing commitment of emergency personnel to protect and serve, a promise that resonates strongly in the wake of the attacks.

Community reflection and gratitude

Parents, alumni and local residents filled the stadium’s stands, many holding small American flags. Attendees listened as school officials spoke about the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by first‑responders, military members and civilians on that fateful day. The remarks emphasized the role of faith, family and patriotism in guiding the nation forward.

Continuing a tradition of remembrance

Since its inception in 2022, the stair‑climb has become a cherished tradition for Pieper High School. Organizers say the event not only honors the fallen but also educates younger generations about the values of service and sacrifice. By involving the JROTC program and local firefighters, the school reinforces a message of unity and resilience that aligns with the community’s Christian and family‑centered values.

Looking ahead

As the ceremony concluded, participants gathered for a moment of silence, followed by the playing of “The Star‑Spangled Banner.” The school plans to expand the tribute next year, inviting additional community groups to share in the remembrance. For now, the sixth‑annual stair‑climb stands as a powerful reminder that the spirit of 9/11 endures in the hearts of Kerrville’s citizens.
