How to Choose the Right Scissor Lift for Your Construction or Maintenance Project

When a contractor or facilities manager needs to reach heights safely, the choice of scissor lift can make or break a project’s efficiency and safety. Understanding three core criteria—required working height, jobsite environment, and weight capacity—helps you match the right machine to the task.

Determine the Working Height

Working height is the platform height plus roughly six feet to account for the operator’s stature. For example, if workers must operate 20 feet above the ground, you’ll need a lift with a platform height of about 14 feet. Selecting a lift that meets or exceeds this requirement ensures workers can perform tasks comfortably without over‑extending the equipment.

Match the Lift to the Jobsite Environment

Jobsite conditions dictate the power source and chassis type. Electric scissor lifts are ideal for indoor settings—warehouses, data centers, and interior construction—because they emit no fumes and run quietly. A slab‑type electric lift offers a low ground clearance and non‑marking tires, perfect for smooth concrete floors.

Diesel scissor lifts provide longer run times and robust power for outdoor sites such as stadiums, parking lots, and large‑scale construction zones. Their emissions make them unsuitable for enclosed spaces, but their heavy‑duty chassis handles rough ground with ease.

Rough‑terrain scissor lifts—available in both electric and diesel configurations—feature pneumatic tires, optional 4WD, and sometimes oscillating axles, allowing them to traverse sand, mud, and uneven ground safely.

Check Overhead Clearance and Weight Capacity

Measure doorways, structural beams, and any obstacles at both partial and full extension to ensure the lift can pass safely. Weight capacity, listed by the manufacturer, includes the combined weight of operators, tools, and materials. Staying within these limits is essential for OSHA compliance and worker safety.

Common Applications by Lift Type

  • Compact electric lifts: Ideal for low‑profile indoor tasks such as pallet retrieval and light maintenance.
  • Standard electric lifts: Suitable for medium‑height indoor work, including lighting upgrades and HVAC servicing.
  • Rough‑terrain lifts: Best for early‑stage construction, steel erection, and exterior cladding on uneven ground.

When to Rent vs. Buy

Renting offers lower upfront costs, eliminates storage concerns, and provides flexibility to switch models as project phases change. It also shifts maintenance responsibilities to the rental provider. Purchasing may be more economical for businesses that use a lift regularly over many years, delivering a higher return on investment.

Safety and Training

OSHA requires operators to receive proper training and authorization before using scissor lifts. A thorough pre‑use inspection, use of fall‑protection equipment, and adherence to the manufacturer’s load limits are non‑negotiable safety steps.

By evaluating working height, environment, clearance, and load capacity, you can select the scissor lift that keeps your crew productive and safe, whether the job is inside a warehouse or out on a rugged construction site.
