Jimmy Kimmel moves Texas Senate interview to YouTube after FCC pressure

In a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live., the host announced that the interview with Texas Senate candidate James Talarico will not air on ABC television. Kimmel said the Federal Communications Commission, which operates under the Trump administration, “threatened” the show, its network and local affiliates, forcing the segment to be posted on YouTube.

FCC pressure and the equal‑time rule

Kimmel noted that for more than two decades his program has featured candidates without incident. He suggested that the change came after President Trump took office, pointing to a new FCC directive announced in January that requires late‑night and daytime talk‑show hosts to follow the equal‑time rule traditionally applied only to news broadcasts.

The equal‑time rule obligates broadcast stations to give comparable airtime to political candidates when one appears on‑air. The Trump administration’s FCC has argued that extending the rule to talk‑show guests ensures fairness, but critics say it threatens editorial independence.

Previous online moves

This is not the first time an interview with Talarico has been shifted online. Earlier this year, Stephen Colbert’s show moved the candidate’s appearance to YouTube after network lawyers warned that airing the segment could violate FCC guidance on equal time.

Both incidents illustrate the growing tension between broadcasters and the FCC over how political content is treated on television.

Political context in Texas

Talarico, a Democrat, is running a tight race against Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. The contest has drawn national attention because it could signal a shift in a state that has been solidly Republican for decades.

While the campaign heats up, the FCC’s actions have sparked criticism from Democrats on the commission. Anna Gomez, the sole Democratic commissioner, posted on social media that Kimmel’s decision “shows just how far this administration’s campaign of censorship and control has gone.” She called the move “intimidation” and urged courts to clarify that the FCC has no authority to dictate editorial choices.

Trump administration’s stance

The Trump administration maintains that the rule is a matter of fairness and constitutional compliance, not censorship. By extending equal‑time requirements to talk‑show hosts, the administration argues it is protecting voters’ right to hear balanced viewpoints, a principle rooted in the First Amendment.

In August, Disney‑owned ABC sued the FCC on First Amendment grounds, claiming that the agency’s demand for early review of broadcast licenses posed an “existential threat” to the network. The lawsuit underscores the broader industry concern that the FCC’s policies could set a precedent for government overreach into editorial decisions.

What’s next for the interview?

Kimmel said the interview will be available on YouTube, allowing viewers to watch the conversation without FCC interference. He emphasized that the decision reflects a commitment to free speech and the ability of broadcasters to make independent editorial choices.

As the Texas Senate race continues, the clash between the Trump administration’s regulatory agenda and the entertainment industry’s desire for editorial freedom is likely to remain a focal point of national discussion.
