Legal dispute forces Ventana Grill restaurant in Pismo Beach to close

Pismo Beach, Calif. – A long‑standing legal dispute has resulted in the abrupt closure of Ventana Grill, one of the city’s most beloved shoreline restaurants and event venues. The decision follows a county judge’s ruling in favor of the landowner, CCC, after the property’s new owners raised serious safety concerns.

Background of the venue

Before it became the upscale Ventana Grill, the site was home to the locally known Pelican Point restaurant and bar, a favorite spot for couples staying at the nearby Shore Cliff Hotel to host wedding receptions after ceremonies on the bluffs. After an acquisition by The Old Custom House, Inc., the property was remodeled to maximize its panoramic ocean view, and for the past 16 years it has served as a full‑service venue for weddings, corporate events, and private parties.

Ownership changes and lease terms

In 2023, an equity firm specializing in hospitality purchased the Martin Resorts Collection, acquiring the land beneath Pismo Lighthouse Suites, the Shore Cliff Hotel, and Ventana Grill. While the acquisition merged the hotels under a single owner, the restaurant’s lease remains in effect until 2045, giving the operator a long‑term right to occupy the space.

Safety concerns trigger shutdown

After the new landowners began inspecting their newly acquired property, they identified serious structural safety issues that, in their view, required an immediate shutdown for a comprehensive refit. The Old Custom House, which continues to operate the restaurant, filed a formal civil complaint against CCC in August of last year, a month after receiving notice to cease operations.

Judge’s ruling and immediate impact

San Luis Obispo County Judge Craig van Rooyen issued a ruling last month that sided with CCC, ordering Ventana Grill to close its doors. The restaurant’s final day of business is slated for this Saturday, leaving many upcoming events in limbo.

Consequences for booked weddings

Couples who have already booked weddings at Ventana Grill in the coming weeks and months now face potential financial loss, especially if they lack cancellation insurance. Brian Kelly of BriteCo wedding and event insurance highlighted the situation as a cautionary example, urging engaged couples to secure both liability and cancellation coverage when planning their celebrations.

What’s next for the property?

The landowner plans to address the identified structural deficiencies before any future tenant can resume operations. While no timeline has been announced for a possible reopening or new leaseholder, the closure underscores the importance of thorough property inspections and clear lease agreements in the hospitality industry.

Community response

Local residents and business owners expressed disappointment at the loss of a venue that has been a fixture of Pismo Beach’s tourism and wedding market. Many hope that the issue will be resolved quickly so the shoreline can once again host celebrations that contribute to the town’s vibrant economy.
