New Haven Holds 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony with Volunteer Projects

NEW HAVEN, Ind. – The City of New Haven is inviting residents to gather for a solemn 9/11 remembrance ceremony on Friday, September 11, at 8 a.m. The event will take place at The 909, located at 909 Main Street, and is designed to honor the lives lost in the September 11th attacks while fostering community spirit.

Honoring the Fallen

City officials say the ceremony will feature remarks from local leaders, a moment of silence, and the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” to reflect on the nation’s resilience. “We want to remember the heroes and the innocent lives taken that day, and we want our community to come together in gratitude and service,” said Mayor Sarah Whitaker.

Volunteer Service Projects

Immediately after the ceremony, several volunteer groups will mobilize for service projects across New Haven. Planned activities include neighborhood clean‑ups, assistance at the local food pantry, and a tree‑planting initiative in Riverside Park. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department is coordinating the tree planting, aiming to add 50 new trees to the park’s canopy.

Local nonprofit “Hands of Hope” will lead the food‑bank effort, collecting non‑perishable items and sorting donations for families in need. “Our volunteers see this as a way to turn remembrance into action,” said volunteer coordinator Mark Daniels.

Community Participation

Organizers encourage residents of all ages to participate, emphasizing the event’s focus on family values and civic responsibility. High school students from New Haven Central High are expected to join the clean‑up crews, while senior citizens are invited to assist with the tree‑planting.

“Teaching our youth the importance of service is a cornerstone of our community,” noted school principal Linda Martinez. “It aligns with the values of faith, family, and liberty that our town holds dear.”

Logistics and Safety

The ceremony will be held outdoors, and attendees are asked to bring masks and practice social distancing as a precaution. Parking is available at the adjacent municipal lot, and the city will provide additional street parking for volunteers.

For more information about volunteer sign‑ups, residents can visit the City of New Haven’s website or call the volunteer hotline at (555) 123‑4567.

Looking Ahead

This remembrance event is part of New Haven’s broader effort to keep the memory of 9/11 alive while strengthening community bonds through service. The city plans to make the ceremony an annual tradition, pairing reflection with tangible acts of kindness.
