UK Defence Ministry Expands Use of SpaceX Starshield, Spending Nearly $40 Million on Satellite Services

London – The UK Ministry of Defence announced that it has invested roughly £29.5 million (about $40 million) in SpaceX satellite services, marking the first public acknowledgement by a non‑U.S. nation of using the company’s Starshield network for military and intelligence missions. The ministry now operates around 1,000 Starshield terminals alongside 500 Starlink terminals across the armed forces.

Why the shift to Starshield?

According to the ministry, Starshield provides “enhanced encryption, military‑specific terms of service, the highest level of network prioritisation, flexible licensing arrangements, and expanded coverage.” The service runs on the same low‑Earth‑orbit constellation as Starlink but uses dedicated terminals and separate ground‑based gateways, giving the British forces a more secure communications channel.

Cost and contract details

Britain has spent about £13 million on Starshield terminals and airtime, and £16.5 million on Starlink equipment and services. Two Starshield pricing plans are available: £5,500 per month for five terabytes of data and an unlimited plan at £25 000 per month. By comparison, a typical UK Starlink business plan costs £1 830 per month for two terabytes of global data.

Starshield terminals themselves cost between £4 000 and £7 000 each, roughly double the price of comparable business‑grade Starlink terminals.

Strategic context

The move comes as European governments seek to strengthen their own defence capabilities while questioning the long‑term reliability of Washington’s security commitments. The UK already operates its own military satellite network, Skynet, and holds a stake in France‑based Eutelsat, the only other major operational low‑Earth‑orbit broadband constellation besides Starlink.

SpaceX distinguishes Starlink as a civilian service and Starshield as a government‑focused offering. The company declined to comment on which countries currently have access to Starshield.

International interest

Other allies are watching the UK’s approach. New Zealand is trialling Starshield to assess its usefulness for military operations, and the U.S. Pentagon has recently faced criticism after a five‑fold price increase for Starlink services used in drone operations against Iran – a hike that SpaceX said reflected the use of Starlink rather than the more appropriate Starshield.

Implications for British defence

By integrating Starshield, the Ministry of Defence aims to ensure that military communications are kept separate from the morale, welfare, recreation and training uses that SpaceX now restricts Starlink to. The expanded satellite capability is expected to improve secure data transmission for battlefield coordination, drone control and intelligence sharing.

While the reliance on a U.S. private company raises questions about strategic independence, officials argue that the enhanced security features of Starshield make it a prudent addition to the UK’s existing satellite assets.
