Hormuz Strait sees only seven vessel transits on Wednesday, down from daily average

Preliminary ship‑tracking data released on Thursday indicate a noticeable dip in traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. On Wednesday, only seven vessels were recorded transiting the narrow waterway, compared with 12 the day before and a ten‑day average of 14.

Of the seven movements, four were exits from the strait and three were entries. The exits included one very large crude carrier, the Finland Prosperity, which was carrying nearly two million barrels of crude oil. No liquefied natural gas tankers left the strait that day. The remaining exits were made by two dry‑bulk carriers and a short‑range dirty‑products tanker.

Among the three vessels that entered the Hormuz corridor, one was a dry‑bulk carrier while the other two were a short‑range tanker and a medium‑range tanker. Analysts note that some ships may be sailing with their transponders turned off, meaning the actual number of passages could be higher than reported.

For comparison, traffic through the nearby Bab el‑Mandeb Strait remained steady, with 28 commodity ships transiting on Wednesday—essentially matching its ten‑day average of 27. Of those, 16 ships entered the strait and 12 exited.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, handling a significant share of the world’s petroleum flow. Any fluctuation in traffic can have ripple effects on energy markets, especially when geopolitical tensions in the region rise. While the current dip is modest, market observers will watch closely for any sustained trends that could influence oil prices or supply chain stability.

Industry sources stress that short‑term variations are common and often reflect routine scheduling, maintenance, or seasonal demand shifts. However, they also caution that broader geopolitical developments—such as regional conflicts or diplomatic negotiations—can quickly alter shipping patterns.

Overall, the latest figures suggest a temporary slowdown rather than a systemic disruption. Stakeholders in the energy sector, including traders, refiners, and policymakers, will continue to monitor the Hormuz corridor alongside other key maritime routes to assess any emerging risks to global energy security.
