Des Moines welcomes Navy sailor Peyton Decker home after 250‑day deployment

Des Moines, Iowa – Aviation Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class Peyton Decker stepped off the plane at Des Moines International Airport on Saturday, greeted by a crowd of family, friends, and community members who had gathered to welcome him back after a deployment that lasted more than 250 days.

Decker had been assigned to the USS Abraham Lincoln, where he performed maintenance duties as part of the ship’s aviation department. The deployment, described by local officials as part of the ongoing naval operations related to the conflict with Iran, kept him away from home for nearly a year, and he had not spoken with his family since December.

“It’s amazing to be surrounded by people who know and love him. And that just speaks to the Iowa community. And it’s a special night. He’s home now,” said Scott Decker, Peyton’s father, as the family embraced the sailor.

Peyton expressed a mixture of relief and release after the long stretch at sea. “A lot of relief. A lot of built‑up tension is now leaving me,” he told the gathered crowd, his voice reflecting the exhaustion of months spent far from home.

The gathering at the airport highlighted the strong ties between the military and the Des Moines community. Residents turned out in sizable numbers, waving signs and offering words of encouragement, underscoring the town’s tradition of supporting service members and their families.

Following the emotional reunion, Decker announced that he will continue his military service with a forthcoming assignment in California after spending some time at home with his loved ones. The brief homecoming provides an opportunity for the family to reconnect before he returns to duty.

Community response

Local leaders and community members praised the Navy’s service and the sacrifices made by Decker and his fellow sailors. The warm reception at the airport reflects Des Moines’ longstanding respect for those who serve the nation, aligning with the city’s values of family, faith, and patriotism.

“Our town stands behind our troops,” said a city spokesperson, adding that the support shown to Decker is representative of the broader community’s commitment to honoring military families.

Looking ahead

As Decker prepares for his next assignment, the Des Moines community will continue to keep him in its thoughts and prayers, embodying the town’s tradition of rallying around its own in times of service and sacrifice.
