University of South Carolina denies student‑run Charlie Kirk look‑alike contest

An anonymous post on the Yik Yak platform advertised a “Charlie Kirk look‑alike contest” to be held on September 10, the one‑year anniversary of the conservative activist’s assassination. The post claimed the event would take place on Greene Street outside USC’s Russell House at 7 p.m., offering a $50 prize and urging participants to “Be there or be square.”

University response

The University of South Carolina quickly responded to the claim, stating, “We have no record of any registered student organization planning such an event. No university resources will be used to support this. DM us if you’d like a contact here that can help verify claims like this ahead of posting.” The university’s statement was posted on its official social‑media channel after the story was amplified by the Libs of TikTok account, which described the alleged contest as “demonic.”

Background on the alleged contest

Charlie Kirk, the 31‑year‑old founder of Turning Point USA, was assassinated on September 10, 2025, while speaking at Utah Valley University during his “American Comeback Tour.” Since his death, several online communities have referenced the date as “Kirkiversary,” a term that has appeared in various memes and posts.

The Yik Yak screenshot does not explicitly state that the contest is intended to celebrate Kirk’s killing; it merely references the anniversary date. Nonetheless, the language used in the post has drawn criticism from conservative observers who view the alleged event as disrespectful.

Similar rumors at other campuses

In addition to the USC claim, screenshots shared with Fox News Digital suggest that a Turning Point USA chapter at Georgetown University also discussed a Kirk look‑alike contest for the same date. According to the shared images, the Georgetown post on the anonymous platform Fizz received more than 2,200 upvotes from a student body of roughly 6,000 undergraduates.

Georgetown University has not yet issued an official comment on the matter.

What this means for students

Both universities emphasize that no official student organization has authorized the events and that campus facilities will not be used. Students who encounter similar posts are encouraged to verify the source before sharing or participating.

As the anniversary approaches, it is likely that additional rumors will surface on social media. Campus officials remain vigilant in monitoring misinformation and ensuring that university resources are not misrepresented.
