Washoe County launches three‑phase recovery plan for Hawk, Bug and Stallion fire victims

Residents of Reno and unincorporated Washoe County whose homes were damaged or destroyed by the August Hawk, Bug and Stallion wildfires now have a clear path to recovery. The Washoe Regional Emergency Information Center announced a three‑phase plan that coordinates county, state and federal resources to assist property owners from hazardous‑waste removal through rebuilding.

Phase 1: Hazardous‑waste assessment and removal

The first step focuses on identifying and safely removing household hazardous materials left behind by the fires. County staff will cover the cost and work with EPA‑qualified contractors to handle batteries, propane tanks, paints, pesticides, herbicides and other items that pose health or environmental risks. The Washoe County Assessor’s Office has already identified affected properties, and Washoe 311 has reached out to owners with instructions. Homeowners who have not been contacted are encouraged to call 3‑1‑1 for assistance.

Phase 2: Debris cleanup

After hazardous waste is cleared, property owners move to the second phase, which addresses structural debris, ash and other fire‑related material. Unlike Phase 1, owners are responsible for coordinating and financing this cleanup, though they may work with their insurance providers. Federal assistance may also be available through the Nevada Office of Emergency Management and the Department of Homeland Security.

Phase 3: Rebuilding support

The final phase helps homeowners navigate demolition and reconstruction. Washoe County’s Community Services Division offers individualized support, including referrals to contractors, permitting guidance and connections to financial‑assistance programs. Property owners can contact the division at (775) 328‑2020 or via email at [email protected].

Additional resources

The recovery package also lists nonprofit organizations that can aid with cleanup and debris removal, as well as financial‑assistance programs for qualifying residents. While all evacuation orders for the Hawk Fire have been lifted, the county’s emergency declaration remains in effect to ensure continued access to resources.

Washoe County officials emphasized that the phased approach is designed to streamline the recovery process, protect public health and help families return to safe, livable homes as quickly as possible. Residents are urged to stay in contact with county agencies and take advantage of the free hazardous‑waste services offered during Phase 1.
