Air Travel Safer 25 Years After 9/11, Yet Perfect Security Remains Elusive

Twenty‑five years after the September 11 attacks, the United States’ aviation security system has undergone a dramatic transformation, making air travel considerably safer for passengers nationwide. Jeff Price, a former Denver International Airport security director and current professor of aviation security, explained how the changes instituted after 9/11 have strengthened the nation’s defenses.

From Flawed Layers to a Unified Agency

The 9/11 Commission found that the pre‑attack security system suffered from weak, fragmented layers—intelligence, passenger prescreening, checkpoint screening, and onboard security—all of which were “seriously flawed.” At that time, airlines themselves performed most screening, often using contractors paid near minimum wage, and the standards were low.

In response, Congress passed the Aviation and Transportation Security Act in November 2001, creating the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Today, the TSA employs roughly 60,000 screeners, with starting wages around $20 an hour plus federal benefits, and it oversees screening at virtually every commercial airport.

Modern Screening Practices

Current checkpoints feature multi‑view X‑ray machines, computed tomography imaging, and advanced body scanners—technology that was unimaginable in the 1970s era described by Price. Passengers now encounter shoe‑removal procedures, liquid restrictions (now limited to 3.4 oz containers in a quart‑sized bag), and reinforced cockpit doors that are locked throughout flight.

Identification and travel documents are required for anyone beyond the security checkpoint, limiting access to passengers and authorized personnel only. The once‑open airport lounges where friends could greet travelers at the gate have been replaced by controlled, credential‑based areas.

Emerging Threats and Ongoing Challenges

Despite these advances, Price warns that new dangers continue to evolve. The proliferation of inexpensive attack drones—used in conflicts such as the Russia‑Ukraine war and recent Iran‑U.S. tensions—poses a fresh risk to airports. He advocates for mandated drone‑detection systems and robust research into safely neutralizing rogue drones in U.S. airspace.

Cybersecurity also remains a major concern, with “endless” and “innovative” attacks targeting airport networks and internal systems. Insider threats and perimeter security weaknesses add further layers of risk.

Balancing Safety and Realism

Price emphasizes that while flying today is “a hell of a lot safer,” critics will always find reasons to disagree. He stresses that achieving 100% security is impossible; the goal is to provide reasonable, risk‑managed protection that deters threats.

“We’re in the business of risk management and deterrence,” he said. “The system will never be perfect, but it has become far more effective than the pre‑9/11 era.”
