Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Set to Launch, Could Boost Foldable Market

Apple is slated to reveal its inaugural foldable iPhone on Wednesday at the company’s Cupertino headquarters. The event marks a major shift for the tech giant, whose flagship iPhone accounts for roughly half of Apple’s revenue and has long set consumer expectations for mobile design.

Why Apple’s Entry Matters

Since the first iPhone introduced touch‑screen technology in 2007, Apple has repeatedly taken emerging formats and turned them into mainstream products. Foldable phones, despite years of development by Samsung, Huawei and other rivals, have remained a niche due to drawbacks such as weaker cameras, reduced battery life and a visible crease when opened.

Analysts note that Apple’s reputation for refining second‑mover designs could give it an edge. Supply‑chain improvements and advances in hinge engineering have made newer foldables more durable and less prone to creasing, setting the stage for broader consumer acceptance.

Recent Foldable Landscape

Samsung’s Fold 8, launched last year, showcases a significantly reduced crease thanks to extensive investment in flexible display technology. Huawei’s 2024 tri‑fold device, priced at $2,800, quickly became a bestseller, while Google exited the foldable market after its 2023 Pixel Fold.

According to research firm Counterpoint, Samsung currently commands about 40% of the global foldable market, with Huawei close behind at 30%. The remaining share is split among smaller players and experimental designs.

Market Outlook

Industry forecasts suggest Apple’s entry could accelerate growth. IDC estimates foldable shipments may rise nearly 30% this year, contrasting with an expected 1.4% decline in traditional smartphones. Counterpoint research director Tarun Pathak said, “Apple’s entry will surely increase competition at the premium end. However, foldables are still a very small part of the overall smartphone market, so there is room for the category to grow well beyond current volumes.”

The anticipated foldable iPhone will adopt a “passport” shape—wider than the taller, book‑style designs favored by some competitors. This format aligns better with video content, reducing black bars and offering a more cinematic viewing experience.

What Consumers Can Expect

While exact specifications remain under wraps, the device is expected to feature a robust hinge, improved battery capacity and camera performance that rivals current flagship iPhones. Apple’s track record suggests the company will address the durability concerns that have hampered earlier foldables.

Industry watchers will be looking for pricing, availability and whether Apple’s ecosystem—iOS, App Store and accessories—will integrate smoothly with the foldable form factor. If Apple can deliver a compelling user experience, the foldable segment could shift from a niche curiosity to a mainstream choice for consumers seeking larger screens without sacrificing portability.
