East Haven Police Ask Residents to Avoid Batt Lane While Investigating Possible Grenade and Flare

East Haven police are requesting that residents and visitors avoid Batt Lane in the vicinity of Charnes Drive as they investigate a report of possible old military relics. The department posted the advisory on its official Facebook page early Thursday, noting that a caller described finding a device resembling a grenade and a flare.

Precautionary response

Chief of Police John Smith emphasized that the department is taking an “abundance of caution” approach. “We do not want anyone to be put at risk while we determine the nature of these items,” he said. “For the safety of the community, we ask that you stay clear of the area until we have completed our assessment and cleared the site.

The police unit that handles hazardous materials, known as the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, has been dispatched to the location. They will conduct a thorough examination to confirm whether the objects are indeed a grenade, a flare, or other military‑era artifacts.

What residents should know

Officials ask anyone who may have witnessed the discovery or who has additional information to contact East Haven Police Department at (203) 555‑1234. The department also encourages anyone who sees suspicious items in the future to report them immediately, citing public safety as the top priority.

While the investigation is ongoing, local businesses and schools in the surrounding area are advised to monitor the situation but have not reported any disruptions. The police department will provide updates via its social‑media channels and local news outlets as more information becomes available.

Community reassurance

East Haven officials stress that such incidents are rare and that the city’s emergency response protocols are designed to handle potential threats swiftly and safely. “Our community is resilient, and we appreciate the cooperation of our neighbors as we work to ensure everyone’s safety,” added Chief Smith.

Residents can continue with their daily routines elsewhere in town, but are urged to follow any additional instructions that may be issued. The police department will lift the advisory once the items have been cleared and deemed safe.
