Shasta County Jail Restores In‑Person Visitation After Year‑Long Pause

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office announced today that in‑person visitation at the Shasta County Jail is back in operation after an almost year‑long suspension. The pause began roughly twelve months ago when construction on the elevator serving the visitation area forced the facility to halt face‑to‑face visits.

Why the suspension lasted longer than planned

Originally slated to last four months, the suspension extended far beyond that timeline for reasons the sheriff’s office has not publicly explained. During the closure, the jail remained closed to visitors, and the office did not issue press releases or respond to repeated media inquiries.

Steps toward reopening

Following a report by Shasta Scout last month highlighting the impact of the suspension on inmates and their families, the sheriff’s office confirmed that visitation would resume on Sept. 8. A jail staff member verified the reopening on site.

The Board of State and Community Corrections, which had been monitoring the construction project, also confirmed awareness of the issue. The board conducted a targeted inspection in early August, preceding the announcement of the visitation restart.

Constitutional and public‑safety importance

Rio Scharf, a staff attorney at the University of California, Berkeley Law’s Criminal Law and Justice Center, has been tracking the situation. Scharf emphasized that in‑person visitation is a constitutional right for incarcerated individuals and their families, and that it plays a vital role in enhancing safety both inside the jail and throughout the broader community.

“Because of the value of in‑person visits, other counties should avoid doing what Shasta County did here: suspending in‑person visits for a full year,” Scharf wrote. “We urge counties to maintain robust in‑person, and preferably contact, visitation programs.”

Benefits of face‑to‑face contact

Research consistently shows that regular visitation reduces recidivism and lowers misconduct rates within correctional facilities, outcomes that translate into safer neighborhoods.

Prior to today’s reopening, the only opportunity for families to see loved ones in person was during court hearings, where direct communication with inmates is prohibited.

New visitation schedule and supplemental video option

With the resumption, the jail will allow each inmate two visits per week, limited to one adult visitor per day, in 30‑minute slots. To offset the lost time during the suspension, the facility will also provide one free hour of video visitation each week, though some users have reported technical issues with the tablets.

Those wishing to schedule a visit must complete a form on the sheriff’s office website. While construction continues at the jail, officials say progress now permits visitation with only minor, possible short delays.

Community response

Family members and advocates have welcomed the news, noting the emotional relief of being able to reconnect in person after months of isolation. The sheriff’s office has not indicated any further changes to visitation policy beyond the current schedule.
