Local volunteers and aerial crews join forces to combat Texas Ross Fire

As the Ross Fire continues to rage across the Texas countryside, community volunteers and aerial firefighting teams have stepped up to protect homes and preserve the natural landscape. The blaze, which remains over 40% uncontained, has prompted a coordinated response that blends high‑tech water drops with grassroots hospitality.

Aerial assets deliver hundreds of thousands of gallons

Bridger Aerospace, a private aerial‑firefighting firm, has already released more than 350,000 gallons of water onto the flames. “We actually put water right on the fire and get cool that out, so ground crews can get in there and put that fire out,” explained Mel Holtz, a spokesperson for the company. The aircraft are repeatedly scooping water from Possum Kingdom Lake, each cycle lasting eight to twelve seconds and pulling roughly 1,412 gallons per pass. This continuous loop of water delivery helps lower flame intensity, giving ground crews a safer environment to work.

Church becomes a lifeline for firefighters

On the ground, a local church has transformed its assembly hall into a resource hub for the men and women battling the blaze. The facility offers three warm meals a day, basic first‑aid supplies, gloves, and other essential gear. Volunteer Jennifer Sells Smith, whose family was recently evacuated, drove to the church with a case of water and now helps keep the hub stocked. “All the firefighters showed up for us; we were just like, we’re gonna show up for them,” Smith said.

Beyond food and supplies, the church provides a cool, air‑conditioned space where firefighters can briefly rest, hydrate, and regroup before returning to the front lines. “Comfort, being able to get out of their trucks, being able to just be in the AC, being able to relax just a little bit,” Smith noted.

Thank‑you messages and community spirit

Volunteers have also crafted simple thank‑you cards from cardboard, which firefighters display proudly on their equipment. “After two weeks of doing this, we’ve never turned someone away, nor will we,” Smith affirmed, underscoring the unwavering commitment of the local community.

The combined effort of aerial crews, private contractors, and everyday citizens exemplifies the resilient spirit that defines Texas neighborhoods. By pooling resources, expertise, and compassion, these partners are helping to protect families, preserve property, and ultimately bring the Ross Fire under control.
