Family of Southfield woman killed outside TGI Fridays urges authorities to keep suspect detained

Southfield, Mich. – The family of Sonja Bruner, a 58‑year‑old Southfield resident who was shot and killed outside the TGI Fridays on Lavish Biker Bash night, gathered Tuesday to share their grief and demand that the 35‑year‑old suspect remain behind bars.

Heartbreak and remembrance

Bruner, described by her sister Anika Waddell as “loving, very loving” and a devoted grandmother, had recently endured the loss of her son and husband. “She was kind and free‑spirited, always wanting to help people,” Waddell said, adding that the tragedy has left the family trying to figure out life without her.

Another sister, Valesia Waddell Crump, expressed the family’s anguish: “This man took somebody away from us that we love, and we can’t bring her back. He still has his family, his mother can still hug him. We can’t talk to our sister.”

Calls for accountability

Mother Gwendolyn Taylor condemned the violence, stating, “I was heartbroken because he took my daughter’s life. She was a human being. He didn’t have to do that. You don’t have to turn to violence.”

Waddell Crump emphasized that the suspect should not be released: “He should not be out, period. He should not even have the chance to be out and my sister’s life is gone.”

The family also pointed to the circumstances surrounding the shooting. “From the video, my sister’s gun never left her side. She was intoxicated, and all of the men were standing around her. There was no sensible man who tried to help,” said Crump, adding that men have a responsibility to protect.

Suspect released from custody

Despite the family’s pleas, the 35‑year‑old suspect was released from custody on Tuesday. Local law‑enforcement officials have not provided a detailed explanation for the release, prompting the family to demand transparency and a swift review of the decision.

Broader responsibility

The relatives called for accountability beyond the alleged shooter, naming the organizer of the Lavish Biker Bash as part of the responsibility chain. “Everyone involved should be held responsible, including the event organizer,” the family said.

Community leaders and local officials have not yet commented on the release or the family’s statements. The Southfield Police Department is expected to release further information regarding the suspect’s status and any ongoing investigation.

Support for the family

Friends, neighbors, and local churches have rallied around the Bruner family, offering meals, prayers, and counseling services. Several faith‑based groups have organized prayer vigils at the TGI Fridays location, underscoring the community’s commitment to supporting the grieving family.

The tragedy has reignited conversations in Southfield about public safety at large gatherings and the need for stronger protective measures at events that draw sizable crowds.
