Hungary Expels Ten Russian Diplomats Over Unacceptable Activities

Budapest announced Tuesday that ten members of the Russian diplomatic mission have been ordered to depart Hungary. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Orban posted on X that the individuals “engaged in activities in Hungary that are unacceptable for diplomats under the Vienna Convention,” and that the Hungarian side has therefore called on them to leave.

Security and Sovereignty Protected

Orban emphasized that the decision “protects Hungary’s security and sovereignty” but does not signal a break in diplomatic relations with Russia. She added that Hungary will continue “necessary dialogue, based on mutual respect and adherence to the rules.” The statement makes clear that while the expulsions are firm, Budapest still seeks constructive engagement where possible.

EU and NATO Context

European Commission spokesperson Christian Wigand said the EU “takes note of Hungary’s legitimate decision” to expel the Russian diplomats, describing the action as an expected response to “Russia’s persistent campaign in using hybrid attacks against the EU and its member states.” Hungary is both a member of the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the latter of which includes the United States as a founding member.

The Russian Foreign Ministry, speaking to state news agency RIA Novosti, warned of an “appropriate response” to the expulsions, indicating that Moscow views the move as a diplomatic affront.

Implications for NATO Allies

Hungary’s action aligns with a broader pattern among NATO members to push back against Russian espionage and influence operations. By invoking the Vienna Convention, Budapest signals that it will enforce international diplomatic norms and protect its citizens from covert activities.

While the expulsions may heighten tensions, they also demonstrate a willingness by a Central European ally to stand firm on security matters without severing diplomatic ties. This balanced approach reflects the alliance’s broader strategy of deterrence combined with open channels for dialogue.

Local Perspective

For Hungarians, the decision is framed as a protective measure for the nation’s safety and constitutional freedoms. The government’s swift response reassures citizens that their leaders are vigilant against foreign interference, a concern that resonates across many communities that value national sovereignty and traditional values.

As the situation develops, observers will watch for any reciprocal measures from Moscow and assess how the move influences broader EU‑Russia relations.
