Head for the Cure 5K draws nearly 1,000 San Antonio participants to support brain cancer families

San Antonio – The Head for the Cure 5K, a community‑driven fundraiser that began as a modest gathering outside KSAT to honor the station’s late news director Jim Boyle, has grown into a major annual event. This year the race attracted close to 1,000 runners, walkers and supporters, all united by a common purpose: to help families battling brain cancer.

From a small tribute to a statewide mission

Thirteen years ago, family and friends of Jim Boyle organized a simple run to remember his fight against brain cancer. Over the years, the event has expanded far beyond its humble origins, becoming a cornerstone of the local effort to fund research and provide direct assistance to patients and their loved ones.

Why brain cancer demands urgent attention

Maggie Haynes, executive director of the Head for the Cure Foundation, explained that a diagnosis can be both sudden and deeply traumatic. “This disease is, you know, the one word I use for people is ‘traumatizing,’” Haynes said. “Any big health event brings anxiety and a lot of uncertainty.” She cited glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer, noting its median survival rate of about 18 months.

Funds stay local, supporting research and patient care

All proceeds from the 5K are funneled back into the San Antonio area. “The majority of the funds raised are given back locally to centers that are in the fight, both for research and for patient programs as well,” Haynes said. Those dollars support cutting‑edge studies aimed at extending survival and improving quality of life, as well as counseling, transportation assistance and other services that ease the burden on families.

An emotional day of remembrance and hope

Beyond the financial impact, race day offers an emotional outlet for those who have lost loved ones to brain cancer. “So many people show up to remember someone—a friend, a sister, a brother or a mother,” Haynes noted. Participants often wear ribbons or shirts bearing the names of those they honor, turning the course into a moving tribute.

Looking ahead

Organizers are optimistic that the event will continue to grow, drawing more participants and raising additional funds for both research breakthroughs and local support programs. As the community rallies each September, the Head for the Cure 5K stands as a testament to San Antonio’s commitment to compassion, faith, and the fight against a devastating disease.
