Four Renoir Paintings Stolen in Cagnes-sur-Mer Museum Heist, Two Recovered

Early Tuesday morning, the Renoir Museum in the coastal town of Cagnes-sur-Mer was the target of a daring art theft. At 5:48 a.m. local time, the museum’s alarm sounded, and police were on the scene within five minutes, according to Mayor Bryan Masson, a member of the National Rally party, who posted the timeline on Facebook.

How the Heist Unfolded

Masson described the thieves as “well‑equipped and well‑prepared.” The intruders cut through a fence surrounding the museum grounds and entered the building via the gardens. Once inside, they used an electric saw to slice the fixtures that secure the frames of the Renoir works, allowing them to remove four paintings from the ground‑floor storage area, where twelve artworks are kept.

During their escape, the thieves dropped one painting, and a second was later recovered from the museum’s garden. The two recovered pieces are now being examined by conservators, while the remaining four remain missing.

Mayor’s Response and Security Plans

Mayor Masson called the theft “an attack on the history and heritage of Cagnes‑sur‑Mer.” He emphasized that cultural heritage belongs to every resident and pledged to allocate all necessary resources to improve museum security. The town hall announced that the Renoir Museum will remain closed until further notice while security upgrades are implemented.

Masson’s call for tougher security measures aligns with a broader concern across France after a series of high‑profile art thefts, including a recent raid on the Louvre that saw priceless items vanish in minutes. French authorities are reviewing security protocols at museums nationwide to prevent further losses.

Impact on the Community

The theft has shocked the local community, which prides itself on its rich artistic legacy. Residents expressed dismay on social media, noting that the museum is a key cultural attraction that draws visitors to the Riviera. Local business owners fear the closure could affect tourism revenue, especially as the town prepares for the summer season.

Despite the loss, the swift police response and the recovery of two paintings demonstrate the effectiveness of local law‑enforcement coordination. The investigation remains ongoing, with police seeking any surveillance footage or eyewitness accounts that could lead to the perpetrators.

What’s Next?

Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Cagnes‑sur‑Mer police department. The museum plans to reopen once upgraded security systems are installed, and officials hope the incident will serve as a catalyst for stronger protection of France’s artistic treasures.
