Mirra Andreeva assists injured Anastasia Potapova before clinching US Open win

Flushing Meadows – On Monday’s fourth‑round match at the U.S. Open, rising Russian star Mirra Andreeva showed that compassion can coexist with competition. After a hard‑fought first two sets, the 19‑year‑old found herself leading 5‑3 in the final set when opponent Anastasia Potapova slipped and fell, clutching her left knee.

Compassion on the court

Instead of pressing the advantage, Andreeva crossed the net, placed a hand on Potapova’s shoulder and helped the 25‑year‑old to her feet. “I asked if someone could bring her ice,” Andreeva recalled, noting that she wanted her rival to receive prompt treatment. Potapova was escorted to the bench, where medical staff bandaged her knee. Though she was able to continue, the injury limited her movement and she was unable to win another point.

Finishing the match

After the brief pause, Andreeva resumed play and closed out the match 5‑7, 6‑4, 6‑3, earning her first quarter‑final appearance at Flushing Meadows. “It’s not the perfect end to the match,” she said, acknowledging the bittersweet nature of the victory. After the final point, the two embraced, and Potapova appeared visibly emotional.

A shared history

Andreeva and Potapova have known each other since their junior days. Andreeva remembered watching Potapova win the junior Wimbledon title in 2016 and described her as a “little star” she admired. The two first met on tour in 2022, with Potapova winning that encounter. Since then, Andreeva has claimed the next four meetings, including this latest clash that prevented Potapova from reaching her first Grand Slam quarter‑final.

Potapova, now representing Austria after changing her national affiliation, was born in Russia and still competes under the Russian flag in many events. She has spoken highly of Andreeva, calling her a “tough player” and a “nice” teammate with whom she practices regularly.

What this means for the tournament

Andreeva’s win propels her into the quarter‑finals, where she will face a new opponent in the next round of the U.S. Open. Her sportsmanship has drawn praise from fans and commentators alike, highlighting the values of respect and camaraderie that the sport strives to uphold.

As the tournament progresses, the incident serves as a reminder that even at the highest levels of competition, athletes can demonstrate kindness and concern for one another’s well‑being.
