Alabama OC Ryan Grubb Says QB Keelon Russell Will Practice Sliding This Week

Tuscaloosa, Ala. — After the Crimson Tide rolled to a 38‑point victory over the ECU Pirates on Saturday, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb addressed the media on Monday with a clear priority for the coming week: teaching starting quarterback Keelon Russell to slide and protect himself from unnecessary hits.

Why sliding matters

Grubb explained that the long season and the competitive nature of the SEC demand that young quarterbacks learn to preserve their health. “It’s a long season, this is a competitive league, and if he runs around like that every week, it’s going to be an even longer year for him,” he said. “We want to develop his sense of when to get the ball out of his hand, when to take care of edge protection, and when to get down in the open field.”

Coach DeBoer and Russell agree

Both Russell and head coach Kalen DeBoer echoed the sentiment in their post‑game press conferences, noting that while Russell’s playmaking ability – escaping pressure with his legs and navigating the pocket – is a major asset, the team must also emphasize safety. Grubb added, “Any young quarterback that has the ability to move like that, your responsibilities as a coach is that he came here to play quarterback and continue to develop him as a quarterback.”

Practice focus for the Kentucky matchup

The Tide will begin its preparation for the upcoming clash with the Kentucky Wildcats this week, with the first practice dedicated to sliding drills. Grubb said the coaching staff will integrate the technique into both run and pass scenarios, ensuring Russell can make the split‑second decision to protect himself without sacrificing offensive momentum.

Fans can expect to see Russell taking a more cautious approach in the upcoming game on Saturday, Sept. 12, when Alabama travels to Lexington, Kentucky. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CST.

Looking ahead

Alabama’s 48‑10 victory over East Carolina set a strong tone for the 2026 season, and the coaching staff is keen to build on that momentum while safeguarding its star quarterback. By emphasizing sliding this week, the Tide hope to keep Russell healthy for the grueling stretch of conference play ahead.
