North Korea commissions recovered nuclear-capable destroyer Kang Kon

In a ceremony held in Pyongyang on Sunday, North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un announced the commissioning of the guided‑missile destroyer Kang Kon. The warship, capable of carrying nuclear‑armed missiles, marks the country’s second modern destroyer of the Choe Hyon class.

From capsized launch to operational fleet

The Kang Kon’s journey began in May 2025 when a malfunction caused the ship’s stern to slide into the water prematurely, crushing part of the hull and leaving the bow stranded on the shipway. State media initially described the damage as severe, but a day later clarified that the impact was less catastrophic than first feared. Over the ensuing months, North Korean engineers repaired the vessel, restoring it to full operational status.

Kim Jong Un frames the achievement as national resolve

Speaking to reporters, Kim said the commissioning reflects the nation’s “self‑respect, will and strong spirit.” He added that the nuclear‑capable destroyer will send a “strong message of deterrence” to the country’s adversaries, echoing the rhetoric of the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The leader also highlighted the broader naval modernization effort, noting new shipyards on the east coast and a goal of producing two new surface ships each year, including larger cruisers.

Strategic implications

The addition of the Kang Kon expands North Korea’s naval capabilities at a time when its fleet has long lagged behind the modern warships of South Korea and the United States. While the United States and its allies maintain advanced destroyers, submarines, and missile systems in the region, Pyongyang’s push for a “nuclear‑armed force” seeks to counterbalance that superiority.

Analysts note that the Choe Hyon‑class destroyers, displacing roughly 5,000 tons, are the largest warships ever built by North Korea. Their commissioning signals a continued commitment to developing a blue‑water navy capable of projecting power beyond its coastal waters.

Broader naval ambitions

Kim also referenced ongoing projects, including a claimed nuclear‑powered attack submarine comparable in size to U.S. Navy attack subs. Images released in December showed the leader inspecting the submarine inside an indoor construction facility, suggesting that the program is moving forward despite international sanctions.

In addition to the destroyer, the regime plans to construct new naval bases on the east coast to accommodate the expanding fleet. The stated objective is to transform the navy into a credible deterrent force that can protect the nation’s sovereignty.

Family presence at the ceremony

Kim’s daughter, identified as Ju Ae, attended the commissioning ceremony and was photographed with her father and the ship’s crew. Observers interpret her presence as a possible indication of grooming for future leadership roles within the regime.

International reaction

Western officials have expressed concern over North Korea’s continued development of nuclear‑capable naval assets, warning that such advancements could destabilize the already tense security environment in the Korean Peninsula. The United States has reiterated its commitment to regional allies and emphasized the importance of diplomatic efforts to curb Pyongyang’s weapons programs.

Despite the criticism, the North Korean leadership frames the commissioning as a historic milestone, claiming it ends “over 70 years of stagnation” for its navy and showcases the country’s ability to overcome technical setbacks through perseverance.

What’s next for the Korean Peninsula?

As North Korea expands its naval capabilities, regional powers will likely monitor the operational readiness of the Kang Kon and other upcoming vessels. The development underscores the ongoing strategic competition in East Asia and the importance of maintaining a robust deterrent posture.
