Texas State Parks Host Ruck Hikes to Support Veterans’ Mental Health

In September, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is launching a statewide series of Veteran Mental Health Awareness ruck hikes. The events, scheduled at twenty state parks, coincide with Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month and aim to bring families, friends, and veterans together for a shared walk in nature.

What is a ruck hike?

A ruck hike is a walking event where participants carry a weighted backpack, known as a “ruck,” to symbolize the burdens many veterans carry. While the weight is optional, the act of walking side‑by‑side serves as a powerful reminder that no one has to face mental‑health struggles alone.

How to participate

Anyone can join the hikes, whether they bring a weighted pack or not. TPWD encourages participants to register in advance through the department’s website to help plan staffing and safety measures. Veterans and active‑duty service members can receive free entry to the parks by presenting valid military identification at the park headquarters, though TPWD advises arranging this ahead of the hike rather than on the day of the event.

Upcoming hike dates

The first hike will take place at Lake Tawakoni State Park on September 26 at 9 a.m. The following day, September 27, Ray Roberts Lake State Park will host its hike at 10 a.m. A complete schedule of all twenty locations, including details on parking, trail length, and any special accommodations, is available on the TPWD website.

Why it matters

Suicide remains a leading cause of death among veterans, and mental‑health resources are often stretched thin. By gathering in the outdoors, participants can experience the healing benefits of nature while raising awareness of the challenges veterans face. “We want to show our support and bring awareness by letting people know that they are not alone in this fight. Nature can be healing and we want to provide that for them,” said Nichole Mechler, TPWD’s military liaison.

Community impact

Local volunteers, veteran service organizations, and park staff are collaborating to make the hikes safe and welcoming. The events also provide an opportunity for families to learn about available mental‑health services, such as counseling hotlines and veteran support groups, which are highlighted on informational tables at each park.

How to stay involved

Beyond the scheduled hikes, TPWD encourages residents to support veterans year‑round by volunteering at local VA facilities, donating to reputable veteran charities, or simply reaching out to a veteran neighbor to offer a listening ear. The department plans to evaluate the success of the ruck hikes and consider expanding the program in future years, reinforcing Texas’s commitment to caring for those who have served.
