Democratic Veteran Cait Conley Calls Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth a National Security Hazard

Democratic candidate Cait Conley, a 16‑year Army combat veteran running against Rep. Mike Lawler in New York’s 17th Congressional District, told CNN’s “State of the Union” that she would back articles of impeachment against Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth. Conley called Hegseth a “hazard to American national security” and said his actions were failing the men and women who have sworn to protect the country.

Impeachment Call Draws Campaign Fire

Lawler’s campaign manager Ciro Riccardi seized on Conley’s statement, linking it to broader criticism of her political positions. Riccardi accused Conley of refusing to disavow progressive groups and labeled her as “extreme,” noting that her impeachment stance was part of a pattern of radical rhetoric.

Background on Hegseth’s Controversy

House Democrats have already introduced six articles of impeachment against Hegseth, alleging high crimes and misdemeanors related to the Iran conflict, military strikes on suspected drug vessels, the use of the Signal app for operational communications, and alleged oversight failures. Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson dismissed the effort, emphasizing that the department has achieved the President’s objectives in Iran and will continue to protect the homeland.

Hegseth has previously defended himself against criticism over his use of Signal in 2025, accusing the media of relying on disgruntled former employees to tarnish his reputation. He warned that such attacks would not succeed.

Republican Support for Hegseth

Outgoing Sen. Thom Tillis (R‑NC) recently urged President Trump to replace Hegseth, arguing that a new leader was needed to retain and empower military talent. The White House pushed back, with spokeswoman Anna Kelly stating that President Trump has “complete trust” in Hegseth and praising his performance.

Former Army Secretary Dan Driscoll’s resignation added another layer to the dispute. While a source familiar with the situation said Driscoll raised concerns about Hegseth blocking Army transformation efforts, Driscoll publicly praised Hegseth, saying the Army’s progress would not have been possible without his support.

Fox News Digital reached out to Hegseth’s office, the White House, and Conley for comment, but did not receive an immediate response.
