Motorcyclist Killed After Collision with FAST Bus on Cedar Creek Road

Fayetteville police confirmed that a fatal traffic collision occurred Saturday afternoon on Cedar Creek Road near Troy Drive, involving a motorcycle and a Fayetteville Area System of Transit (FAST) bus.

Details of the crash

According to the department’s preliminary investigation, the FAST bus had stopped to unload passengers. While the bus was stationary, the motorcyclist attempted to change lanes and pass the vehicle. The motorcycle struck the back of the bus, causing the rider to be thrown from his bike.

John Wood, 60, a longtime Fayetteville resident, was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Despite emergency responders’ efforts, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Police response and investigation

Fayetteville police officers arrived on scene shortly after the crash was reported. They secured the area, gathered witness statements, and began a standard traffic‑collision investigation. Officers are reviewing dash‑cam footage from the bus, interviewing the bus driver, and examining the roadway for any contributing factors such as lighting, road surface condition, or visibility.

The investigation remains ongoing. Police have not released a definitive cause for the collision, but they have indicated that the motorcyclist’s attempt to merge across lanes while the bus was stopped was a key element of the preliminary findings.

Community impact

The tragedy has resonated deeply within the Fayetteville community. Local motorcyclist clubs and FAST riders posted messages of condolence on social media, emphasizing the importance of road safety for all users. Fayetteville’s mayor’s office reiterated its commitment to improving traffic safety education and exploring additional safety measures for bus routes.

City officials have previously highlighted the need for heightened awareness among motorists when sharing the road with public‑transit vehicles. This incident underscores those concerns and may prompt a review of existing traffic‑control signage and lane‑usage guidelines near bus stops.

Safety reminders

Police and the North Carolina Department of Transportation continue to urge drivers and riders to observe the following safety practices:

  • Maintain a safe distance when approaching stopped buses.
  • Avoid lane changes or passing maneuvers in close proximity to large vehicles.
  • Use turn signals well in advance of any lane shift.
  • Wear appropriate protective gear, especially helmets for motorcyclists.

Residents with information about the crash are encouraged to contact the Fayetteville Police Department’s traffic division.
