Apple names John Ternus CEO as company confronts AI, foldable phone and memory challenges

Apple’s September 9 iPhone event will mark a historic shift: for the first time in more than a decade, Tim Cook will not unveil the company’s newest products. Instead, longtime hardware engineer John Ternus will step onto the stage as Apple’s new chief executive officer.

Why Ternus matters to Apple’s future

Ternus’s deep‑rooted experience in hardware engineering has long been seen as a potential catalyst for a new wave of innovation at Apple. Analysts expect his leadership to accelerate the company’s push into artificial intelligence‑enhanced devices and, perhaps most eagerly anticipated, a foldable iPhone.

Apple recently became the second company in history to reach a $5 trillion market capitalization, raising expectations for both product breakthroughs and continued financial strength. The company’s next moves will be judged against that lofty benchmark.

AI ambitions and the revamped Siri

Apple is betting on a refreshed Siri to help it close the gap with rivals such as Google’s Gemini. The updated assistant will draw on data stored on a user’s iPhone—text messages, photos, calendar entries—to answer questions and complete tasks within apps. Pro‑privacy advocate Nabila Popal of International Data Corporation says Apple’s emphasis on user privacy, combined with AI integration directly into iOS tools like the camera and Messages, could give it a competitive edge.

Critics warn that granting AI agents broad access to personal content could create privacy risks. Michael Stokes, senior vice president of emerging technologies at Veilant, cautions that an AI could act on delegated authority in ways a user might not intend.

Foldable phone prospects

Industry forecasts suggest Apple could capture roughly 40 % of the foldable‑phone market by 2027, despite trailing Samsung and Huawei in this segment. IDC’s report, cited by Popal, notes that Apple’s entry could revive growth in a category that has slowed in recent years.

Investors will be watching closely for any concrete signals of a foldable iPhone at the September event, as the product could become a new revenue driver and a showcase of Apple’s engineering prowess under Ternus.

Memory shortage and pricing pressure

A global shortage of memory chips—driven by soaring demand from data centers—has pushed component prices to historic highs. Apple, along with Nintendo and Microsoft, has responded by raising prices on many devices. While iPhone price tags have remained stable so far, analysts such as Mike Howard of TechInsights predict a potential $250‑$300 increase to preserve margins, possibly pushing flagship models toward the $1,500 range.

EU regulatory hurdles

Apple also faces a tightening regulatory environment in the European Union, its second‑largest market after the United States. Recent changes to App Store terms aim to comply with EU rules, but the company announced it will not launch the new Siri version in the EU because of the European Commission’s requirements.

The EU is pressing both Apple and Google to grant third‑party AI assistants greater access to iOS and Android operating systems. Both firms argue that such access would jeopardize user privacy, a stance that aligns with Apple’s long‑standing privacy commitments.

What lies ahead for Ternus

John Ternus inherits a company that is already deeply embedded in consumers’ daily lives through hardware, services, and accessories. Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan notes that “incremental excellence may no longer be enough to redefine the company.” Ternus’s challenge will be to preserve the profitable machine built under Cook while delivering the kind of technological surprise that once made Apple a cultural phenomenon.

As the September event approaches, investors, developers and everyday users will be watching to see how the new CEO balances innovation, privacy, and regulatory compliance in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.
