Caldwell Park Is Just the Beginning — the Bike Path Along the Sacramento River Is Redding’s Best Free Afternoon

There is a moment, about a mile into the Sacramento River Trail in Redding, when the city noise drops away entirely. The path curves west past a grove of cottonwoods, the river slides green and steady alongside you, and you realize you have stumbled into something genuinely lovely — and it did not cost you a single dollar to get here.

The Sacramento River Trail is Redding’s great civic gift to itself, a paved multi-use path that stretches roughly nine miles along both banks of the Upper Sacramento River, connecting neighborhoods, parks, and viewpoints in a long, easy arc through the heart of the city. Most visitors arrive via the Sundial Bridge trailhead — and yes, that bridge is spectacular, Santiago Calatrava’s glass-decked white spire reflecting off the water at golden hour like something out of a dream — but the trail itself is the real story, and too many people spend all their time taking selfies at the bridge instead of walking the path it anchors.

Start on the north bank and head west. The pavement is smooth, the grade almost entirely flat, and the scenery shifts in satisfying increments. You pass through riparian forest thick with willows and Oregon ash, over creeks that trickle toward the river, and past quiet fishing holes where herons stand motionless in the shallows like statues someone forgot to collect. Deer are common enough in the early morning that locals barely glance up. Osprey nest along this stretch of river every spring, and watching one fold its wings and dive is the kind of thing that makes you put your phone away for a while.

Cyclists, joggers, families pushing strollers, retirees with walking poles — everyone shares the trail with easy, unspoken grace. On a weekday morning, it is peaceful to the point of meditative. On a Saturday, it has the relaxed social energy of a neighborhood block party that stretches for miles. Either version is worth your time.

The south bank portion passes beneath the graceful old Diestelhorst Bridge and continues toward Caldwell Park, where tall oaks shade picnic tables and children splash in the seasonal spray pad in summer. The two banks connect at several points, so you can easily loop back without retracing your steps. The full round trip runs close to nine miles, but there is no obligation to complete it — the trail rewards a short stroll just as generously as a long training run.

Bring water, especially in summer when Redding’s heat is unambiguous. Early morning or evening are the ideal windows from June through September. In spring and fall, honestly, any hour works. Parking is available at the Sundial Bridge trailhead off Auditorium Drive, and there is no fee.

What makes this trail remarkable is not any single dramatic feature. It is the accumulation of small pleasures — the sound of moving water, the shade of old trees, the way the light falls across the river in the late afternoon and turns everything briefly golden. Redding has spent years building a reputation as a gateway to bigger adventures, and rightly so, but sometimes the thing right in front of you is the adventure. This trail is that thing.
