Austin karaoke bar erupts as ‘Choosin’ Texas’ tops charts, sparking Texas‑vs‑South debate

On Saturday night at Ego’s, a popular karaoke spot in Austin, the crowd fell silent as two young women stepped onto the stage. The screen flashed the lyrics to Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” in bright, shifting colors, but most patrons already knew every line by heart.

When the chorus hit, the room erupted in a full‑throttle sing‑along. “As soon as that riff comes in, everybody loses their minds,” said Harrison Anderson, a musician and DJ who runs Thursday night karaoke at Hole in the Wall, another Austin venue.

From Nashville to Austin: A song that bridges rival music hubs

Days earlier, the Pinnacle in Nashville was packed with country‑music executives and songwriters cheering Langley’s win at a major awards ceremony, where a cover of “Choosin’ Texas” was performed. Though Langley herself is not a native Texan, co‑writer Miranda Lambert is, giving the track authentic Lone Star credibility.

The single has now spent 20 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the longest run ever for a non‑holiday song. Its success has sparked a lively conversation about Texas’s cultural identity.

Texas: South or West?

Historian Glen Sample Ely notes that Texas has long straddled both regions. East Texas grew up with a slave‑based cotton economy, while West Texas’s frontier heritage aligns more with the American West. After the Civil War, many Texans emphasized the western narrative—celebrating the Alamo and frontier mythos—to distance themselves from the Confederacy.

“The key to its identity is branding,” Ely said, pointing out how the Texas brand now serves as shorthand for country music and broader American culture, even appearing in a Tokyo bar called Little Texas.

Music industry dynamics

Country music’s business engine still runs through Nashville, but Texas remains the “product.” Artists from Willie Nelson to Kacey Musgraves have long looked to Music City to launch national careers, often returning home to record or start ventures.

“Nashville is the producer, but Texas is the product,” said Jamal Khadar, host of the British radio show “Reimagining Country.” The song’s blend of classic twang, steel guitar, and relatable heartbreak has resonated far beyond state lines.

Local pride and political nods

In Texas, the track has become a rallying cry. Actor Matthew McConaughey performed a bluegrass rendition on “The Tonight Show,” and Governor Greg Abbott placed the song atop his end‑of‑summer playlist.

Music commentator Alan Richard noted that mentioning a state in a song is a long‑standing marketing tactic, and Texas’s larger‑than‑life reputation makes it a perfect hook.

What’s next for the record?

Paul Kingsbury, senior director of editorial research at the Country Music Hall of Fame, admitted the song’s place in history is still being written. “I can’t tell you the last time a very traditional country song also went No. 1 pop,” he said. “We’ll have to mention it – it’s so big, but exactly how we treat it remains to be seen.”

The story of “Choosin’ Texas” illustrates how a single song can ignite regional pride, spark cultural debate, and reinforce Texas’s unique brand on the national stage.
