Washington Paper Mill Disaster Claims Lives of Local Workers

The community of Longview, Washington is mourning after a devastating incident at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co. paper mill. A chemical tank rupture on Tuesday has left 11 workers presumed dead, including beloved family members and community figures.

Community Impact

Longview, a city with a rich history in the paper and lumber industries, is grappling with the loss. Generations of families have worked in local mills, and this tragedy strikes at the heart of the community. Among those presumed dead is Gilbert Bernal, a grandfather and electrician known for his generosity and willingness to help others. Another victim, CJ Doran, was a young husband and the spiritual leader of his family.

The rupture released over 500,000 gallons of a corrosive chemical mix known as white liquor, used in paper production. While the spill has not contaminated the air or drinking water, some contamination has reached the Columbia River, though the EPA reports no significant impact.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the disaster, which is considered one of the deadliest workplace accidents in recent U.S. history. Recovery efforts are slow due to the dangers posed by remaining chemicals. Eight people, including a firefighter, were injured, suffering burns and inhalation injuries.

The Nippon Paper Group, the mill’s parent company, has expressed condolences to the affected families. Meanwhile, the community has rallied to support the victims’ families through fundraising efforts.
