Raleigh installs flashing signs on Peace Street bridge after five truck crashes

Raleigh’s transportation department has taken concrete steps to address a long‑standing safety hazard in downtown. After five separate truck collisions with the low‑clearance ‘Peace Street Peeler’ bridge over a two‑month span, the city installed new flashing LED signs and clearance warning markers to make the bridge’s 12‑foot‑4‑inch height unmistakable.

New signage to prevent further incidents

The upgraded signage includes bright, flashing LED lights that activate when a vehicle approaches, as well as clear, static clearance warnings. Both types of signs prominently display the bridge’s exact clearance, giving drivers ample notice before reaching the structure.

“This is one step toward improved safety,” the Raleigh Transportation Department wrote in a post on X, emphasizing the city’s commitment to protecting motorists and preserving the flow of downtown traffic.

Community concerns persist

While the new signs are a welcome improvement, some longtime residents and business owners argue that they are not enough. Michael Mohrmann, a downtown resident of many years, said, “If I had a dollar for every time I’ve seen a truck get stuck under that bridge… I think the city should consider raising the bridge itself.”

Mohrmann’s sentiment reflects a broader frustration among those who navigate the area daily. The bridge, owned by Norfolk Southern Railway, sits on railroad right‑of‑way, and a city manager’s report indicates that raising the structure is not feasible under current ownership arrangements.

Broader safety upgrades in the area

In addition to the new signs on Peace Street, the city plans to install, upgrade, or replace at least 13 warning signs throughout the surrounding corridor, including West Street and Glenwood Avenue. These measures are part of a larger effort to address the bridge’s 30‑plus‑year history of clearance problems and to reduce the risk of costly damage to both commercial vehicles and the bridge itself.

Truck drivers and delivery companies have also been urged to pay close attention to the new signage, as repeated collisions can result in significant repair costs and service disruptions. The city hopes that the combination of flashing lights and clear clearance markings will give drivers the visual cue they need to avoid the low bridge.

Looking ahead

Although raising the bridge remains off the table, the transportation department says it will continue to monitor the effectiveness of the new signage. If collisions persist, the city may explore additional engineering solutions or work with Norfolk Southern to identify alternative options.

For now, the flashing lights serve as a visible reminder that safety is a shared responsibility among the city, the railroad, and the drivers who keep Raleigh’s downtown moving.
