Richmond roots of Oregon Ducks coach Dan Lanning revisited on 820‑mile drive

Richmond, Mo. – In the quiet town of 6,000 residents an hour northeast of Kansas City, the story of Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning begins. A local school‑board member and longtime friend, Nick Persell, invited me to the high‑school stadium where Lanning first cut his teeth on the gridiron.

From Richmond high school to a cross‑country quest

After graduating from Richmond High, Lanning worked as a physical‑education teacher and assistant coach at nearby Park Hill South High School. Married with a young son and another child on the way, he struggled to break into college coaching. In January 2011, hearing of a possible opening on Todd Graham’s staff at the University of Pittsburgh, Lanning made a bold decision: he packed a suit, told his family he was leaving, and drove 820 miles west on Interstate 70.

Persell recalled the night Lanning announced his plan, “We were playing spades and he said, ‘I’m driving to Pittsburgh.’” The journey, which took roughly 13 hours, became the cornerstone of Lanning’s origin story – a testament to faith, perseverance, and a willingness to risk a stable life for a dream.

Retracing the route

Two weeks before the Ducks entered the 2026 season ranked No. 2 nationally, I followed Lanning’s path. Starting in Richmond, I visited the high‑school gym, the modest field house, and the local stadium where Lanning once practiced. I then headed east on I‑70, stopping in Kansas City, crossing the Mississippi River, and passing through Illinois, all while listening to Eminem – a nod to Lanning’s love of rap.

The drive highlighted the stark contrast between Lanning’s modest Missouri upbringing and the national spotlight he now enjoys at the University of Oregon. At 40, Lanning boasts a 48‑8 record with the Ducks, a Big Ten championship, Fiesta and Orange Bowl victories, and two College Football Playoff appearances.

Why the story matters

For Richmond families, Lanning’s journey underscores the power of hard work, faith, and parental support. It also reminds the community that even the most successful coaches can come from small‑town America, reinforcing the values of traditional families and individual liberty that our readers hold dear.

As the Ducks chase another national title this season, Lanning’s own words echo: “When you win one, the goalposts move, and you try to win two.” His story continues to inspire both on the field and back home in Richmond.
