Kyiv residents endure nonstop air‑raid alerts as Russian attacks shift to 24‑hour pattern

Kyiv families are living under a relentless barrage of air‑raid sirens after Russia changed its attack pattern this week. Previously, most drone and missile strikes came after dark, giving residents a brief respite during daylight hours. Now fast‑flying, jet‑powered drones are being launched around the clock, turning ordinary days into a series of evacuations and delays.

Everyday life upended

Commuters, shoppers and parents report that a single alert can halt a trip to the grocery store, a bank transaction or a school lesson. Volodymyr Bovsunovskyi described a recent outing with his four‑year‑old daughter: they were inside a mall for only twenty minutes when an alert sounded, forcing everyone out as smoke rose nearby. The clothing they needed was never purchased, and the family now wonders how long they can remain in the city.

Public transportation has also been crippled. Train journeys that once took a few hours now stretch into half‑days, with some passengers forced to abandon stalled trains and walk for hours across fields while another alert sounds. Taxi apps have become unreliable; a car that appears nearby can suddenly be shown as thousands of minutes away, leaving riders stranded.

Weddings, meditation and resilience

Even life’s milestones have not been spared. On a Wednesday morning, Iryna Baranova returned home from hair and makeup to hear explosions. She and her fiancé, Evhen Mytsyk, proceeded with their wedding ceremony despite the sirens, later strolling hand‑in‑hand through a botanical garden. “If you wake up in the morning, you have to make the most of that day, because there might not be another chance,” Mytsyk said.

For some, meditation offers a way to cope. Tetyana Shevchenko, who practices in a small wooden gazebo modeled on a Buddhist prayer space, says the routine helps her stay calm amid the constant alarms. She is also navigating a lengthy bureaucracy to recover state funds owed to her late mother, only to be set back each time an alert interrupts her appointment.

Considering relocation

As the attacks continue, several residents are weighing a move out of Kyiv. IT worker Ivan Datsiv described a drone that ripped through his apartment’s floor, destroying the unit next door as well. He joked that he had been planning to repaint, but now says the constant alarms make shelter trips feel pointless and he is thinking of relocating to a quieter city.

Bovsunovskyi, whose pregnant wife is also affected, echoed the sentiment, noting that his daughter’s kindergarten must move children to a shelter whenever an alert sounds. He now picks her up midway through the day because there is “no stability” in the routine.

Community endurance

Despite the exhaustion, many Kyiv residents say the shared hardship has forged a sense of unity. “In this period of adjustments and grieving, all of us are united in our suffering,” Shevchenko said as another siren wailed.

Local authorities continue to advise citizens to follow air‑raid protocols, but the frequency of alerts leaves many questioning how long they can safely remain in the capital. For now, Kyiv’s streets echo with the sound of sirens, and families cling to each other, finding moments of love and faith amid the turmoil.
