Cheniere Energy Partners has announced a significant step forward in its efforts to boost the United States’ LNG export capabilities. The company has signed a contract with Bechtel Energy for the engineering, procurement, and construction of the first phase of its Sabine Pass LNG expansion project located in Cameron Parish, Louisiana.
Project Details
The Sabine Pass LNG terminal, already a major player in the U.S. energy sector, currently boasts natural gas liquefaction facilities with a production capacity exceeding 30 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG. This expansion is set to further solidify the terminal’s role in exporting the nation’s abundant shale gas resources, primarily sourced from the Permian and Haynesville basins.
The first phase of the expansion project includes the construction of Train 7, a boil-off gas re-liquefaction unit, and additional infrastructure that will integrate with the existing facilities at Sabine Pass. Cheniere Energy Partners anticipates making a final investment decision on this phase by early 2027.
Strategic Importance
This expansion is not just a business move but also a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing the U.S. trade balance and providing geopolitical allies with a reliable alternative to Russian or Middle Eastern gas supplies. The project underscores the importance of energy independence and economic growth, aligning with broader national interests.
Cheniere has already issued Bechtel a limited notice to proceed, allowing preliminary engineering and procurement activities to commence. Once completed, Phase 1 of the expansion is expected to add over 6 mtpa of LNG production capacity.
