Saline County seeks volunteers to staff polls for November election

Lincoln, Neb. – With the November election fast approaching, Saline County officials are calling on community members to volunteer as poll workers. Cities like Crete and Friend have already launched recruitment drives, posting requests on social media and local bulletin boards.

Why poll workers are essential

Poll workers perform critical tasks such as opening and closing polling locations, checking voters in, and tallying ballots. “There is generally a scramble every election to find enough people,” said longtime volunteer advocate Gary Binder, who has been signing up poll workers for nearly thirty years.

What volunteers need to know

Binder explained that while the county website lists specific eligibility criteria, the primary requirement is a willingness to set aside personal political views while on duty. “We are neutral. We work according to the laws of the state of Nebraska, and it’s a fun job that gives you a good feeling,” he said.

Training requirements have become more flexible. In the past, volunteers were required to attend an in‑person class, but now the training can be completed online, making it easier for busy citizens to participate.

How to sign up

Residents interested in serving as poll workers in Saline County can find more information and register through the county’s official website. Those living in Lancaster County, which includes Lincoln, can also sign up via a separate link provided by the county election office.

Volunteering at the polls is a tangible way for Nebraskans to support the democratic process, ensure that elections run smoothly, and demonstrate a commitment to civic responsibility.
