State agency approves $6.7 million sale of 32 acres to Verrus data‑center developer

Salem – The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has finalized a $6.7 million agreement to transfer 32 acres of state‑owned land to Verrus, a Silicon Valley firm backed by Google that plans to build a large data‑center complex in the city. The contract, signed two months after the city entered a non‑disclosure agreement with Verrus, secures a critical parcel for the multi‑billion‑dollar project.

Background and timing

The land sale comes more than a year after city officials publicly disclosed that Verrus would be coming to Salem. The data‑center, projected to cost over $5 billion, is expected to create hundreds of construction jobs and long‑term technical positions, bolstering the region’s economy and expanding Oregon’s role in the national tech infrastructure.

State involvement

Governor Tina Kotek directed ODOT to negotiate the transaction, emphasizing the importance of attracting high‑tech investment to the state while ensuring the sale complies with public‑interest standards. The agency’s spokesperson said the deal reflects a “strategic use of state assets to support economic growth and job creation for Oregon families.”

Local impact

City leaders have highlighted the project’s potential to increase tax revenue, stimulate ancillary businesses, and provide new educational partnerships for local schools and community colleges. Parents and community members have expressed optimism that the data‑center will bring stable, well‑paid jobs without compromising the city’s character.

Next steps

ODOT will complete the transfer of title within the next 30 days, after which Verrus will begin site preparation. The company has pledged to adhere to state environmental regulations and to work closely with local officials on infrastructure upgrades, including road improvements and utility expansions.

While some residents have raised concerns about traffic and environmental impact, city planners assure that comprehensive studies are underway to mitigate any negative effects. The project is slated to break ground in early 2027, with full operation expected by 2030.
