Texas Senate Race Heats Up as Paxton Seeks to Close Gap on Talarico

Texans are entering the final stretch of the 2026 Senate race with Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton trailing Democrat James Talarico in recent polls. While national GOP operatives have taken note of the tight numbers, Paxton’s campaign says a fresh infusion of money and the President’s endorsement will help close the gap before Election Day on Nov. 3.

Polling and Advertising Disparities

Summer polling consistently placed Talarico ahead by a few points, a trend that has alarmed Republican strategists. The Democrat also outspent Paxton on television and digital ads, reportedly spending roughly 200 times more than the Republican incumbent during the summer months.

Trump’s Involvement and Funding Requests

President Donald Trump has publicly praised Paxton, calling him “the strongest, smartest attorney general in the United States.” Trump’s political action committee, MAGA Inc., is being urged by allies of the Senate Leadership Fund to allocate a portion of its $400 million war chest to the Texas race. Sources say the request could be acted on after Labor Day.

Political writer Gromer Jeffers of The Dallas Morning News noted a “standoff” between the Senate Leadership Fund and Trump’s PAC, suggesting that the two GOP fundraising engines are still negotiating how best to support Paxton.

Grassroots Money and Upcoming Expenditures

Paxton’s campaign announced plans to spend $18 million over the next two weeks, a figure that reflects a surge in grassroots contributions from Texans and conservatives nationwide. A campaign spokesperson highlighted that Paxton’s fundraising in the last quarter outpaced any other Republican Senate candidate.

In contrast, the Talarico campaign is described by Paxton supporters as “bankrolled by out‑of‑state money from California, coastal billionaires, and mysterious small‑dollar donations.” Whether those claims hold up under scrutiny will likely become a talking point as the race tightens. Both campaigns will file detailed donation reports for July, August, and September in the coming weeks, providing a clearer picture of where the money is coming from and how it is being spent.

What’s at Stake

The race is more than a partisan contest; it reflects the broader battle for control of the Senate and the direction of national policy. Republicans see Paxton’s seat as a critical hold for the Trump administration’s agenda, while Democrats view Talarico’s lead as a sign of shifting voter sentiment in a traditionally red‑leaning state.

As the November election approaches, Texas voters will decide whether Paxton can leverage the President’s backing and a fresh cash injection to overcome Talarico’s early advantage. The outcome will have implications not only for Texas but also for the balance of power in Washington.
