In a swift response, Norwalk police officers rescued two men from the waters near Chimon Island on Wednesday evening after their jet ski overturned and sank. The incident occurred around 5:11 p.m., prompting a rapid deployment of the Norwalk Marine Unit.
Upon arrival, officers found the two men in the cold water, exhibiting signs of early-stage hypothermia. They were quickly pulled onto a police vessel where they were warmed up in the cabin during the return to shore. The sunken jet ski was later recovered by a separate police vessel.
Once ashore at Veteran’s Memorial Park Marina, Norwalk paramedics evaluated and treated the men. Fortunately, neither suffered serious injuries, and they were released after treatment.
Additional Incident Near Goose Island
Shortly after the initial rescue, the Westport Police Department received a report of another jet ski incident near Goose Island. This time, a disabled jet ski was emitting smoke with one person aboard. Norwalk Marine Unit officers assisted their Westport counterparts, and the individual was safely brought onto Westport’s police vessel without entering the water.
These incidents highlight the importance of safety and preparedness when engaging in water activities, especially as the summer season approaches. Local authorities remind residents and visitors to ensure their watercraft are in good condition and to be aware of weather conditions before heading out on the water.
