Students cool on AI hype but still want adaptive study tools

While national surveys reveal growing skepticism toward artificial intelligence in classrooms, local families, teachers and students remain eager for smarter study aids. A Gallup‑Walton Family Foundation poll released in April showed Gen Z’s enthusiasm for AI slipped 14 points in a year, with anger toward the technology rising nine points—even among daily users.

Back‑to‑school concerns and a push for “tech‑free” days

Education Week reports an ed‑tech backlash is underway, as schools experiment with “tech‑free” days and parents voice worries about screen time. Sixty‑one percent of public educators say parents feel there is too much technology in the classroom, and more than half believe ed‑tech is harming students’ social‑emotional development, behavior, mental health and overall well‑being.

Quizlet’s How America Learns 2026 report

Against that backdrop, the 2026 “How America Learns” study from global learning platform Quizlet offers a nuanced picture. The survey of 2,017 U.S. respondents—including 1,005 students ages 14‑22, 501 high‑school or college teachers, and 511 parents—found that while AI excitement is cooling, demand for adaptive, flexible study tools remains strong.

Nearly all students (98%) said it’s important for study tools to adjust to their learning progress, with more than half rating that adaptability as “extremely” or “very” important. Flexibility emerged as the single most valuable benefit of digital learning across students, parents and teachers.

Educators and parents still see AI’s value

Seventy‑one percent of teachers agreed AI is effective in supporting personalized learning, and an overwhelming 90% of all respondents—students, parents and teachers—believe digital tools have a place in education. Eighty‑two percent think hands‑on experience with AI tools will be crucial for graduates seeking college admission or good jobs.

However, a third of respondents feel schools are not adequately preparing students for success beyond the classroom.

Student reservations and the need for relevance

Students remain the most skeptical group: only 25% view AI positively, compared with 47% of teachers and parents. Many students cite a mismatch between current classroom AI uses—such as generating lesson materials (used by 38% of teachers)—and the support they actually need. Less than one‑in‑five students feel very confident in their study progress, and about a quarter worry they aren’t focusing on the right material.

Despite reservations, roughly 85% of high‑school and college students reported using AI for assignments. Of those, 60% said AI helped them work more efficiently, and 37% said it reduced stress.

What this means for the upcoming school year

As districts prepare for the 2026‑27 academic year, the findings suggest AI tools should serve as genuine learning guides—adapting to each student’s study habits and needs rather than merely delivering generic content. While enthusiasm may be cooling, the demand for flexible, personalized study aids remains robust.

Quizlet partnered with global research firm Allison Worldwide to conduct the survey, fielded in March‑April 2026 using the Forsta platform and a RepData panel.
