James Talarico hosts community Lotería rally in San Antonio ahead of Senate race

On Tuesday evening, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico turned a typical campaign rally into a neighborhood celebration at Backyard on Broadway in San Antonio. Roughly 300 attendees arrived early, checked bags, and waited for a night of mariachi music, Lotería games and merchandise prizes.

Community‑first format

The event was billed as a “community event,” and Talarico told reporters he wanted supporters to mingle beyond the usual speech‑and‑cheer format. “So many political events are kind of, the candidate gets up and talks at the people,” he said. “We wanted to do something where we bring folks together, build community, have some fun, support a great small business, and have an opportunity for folks to talk with each other.”

Local flavor and small‑business support

Backyard on Broadway, a locally owned venue, provided the backdrop for the evening. After a brief security screening, guests participated in ice‑breakers that asked for first‑time voters, first‑time rally attendees, and single Democrats looking to meet fellow supporters. The Lotería cards were called out in Spanish, and a live mariachi band added a festive soundtrack.

Talarico’s message to San Antonio

When Talarico finally took the stage at about 8:45 p.m., he opened by acknowledging the recent severe storm that knocked down trees and left thousands without power. “I know that this has been a tough week for San Antonio … with folks showing up to serve their neighbors, to serve each other,” he said. “As always, San Antonio has shown the world what it means to be a Texan. We need leaders in Austin and in Washington who are going to show up for San Antonio.” He spoke for roughly ten minutes, emphasizing the need for Texas to reclaim political power and promising to “take back power for each other” in November.

Building Democratic infrastructure

The rally underscores the Democratic Party’s effort to strengthen its foothold in a state where it has not won a statewide race in more than three decades. Talarico, a 37‑year‑old former state representative, is raising record‑breaking sums and attracting a celebrity‑level social‑media following. Supporters like retired veterinarian Curren Corder of Alamo Heights praised his eloquence, comparing him to national figures such as Senator Jon Ossoff and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Party officials hope that events like this will translate enthusiasm into lasting grassroots organization, helping to fill the infrastructure gap that has hampered Texas Democrats since the Beto O’Rourke era.

Looking ahead to November

With the November 3 ballot featuring a governor’s race, numerous state offices and the high‑profile Senate contest between Talarico and Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, the rally serves as both a fundraiser and a community‑building exercise. Attendees lingered after the speeches for a photo line and a brief Q&A with the media, reinforcing the campaign’s message that personal connections are essential to winning the state.

As the campaign season intensifies, Talarico’s team plans additional events across the region, aiming to keep the focus on local families, faith communities, and the individual liberty that many Texans hold dear.
