San Antonio council to consider 3.9% property tax hike in 2027 budget

San Antonio’s 2027 budget proposal would raise the city’s spending by about 4.1% to $4.4 billion. A key component of the plan is an estimated 3.93% increase in property taxes for homeowners.

Public reaction

Homeowners voiced mixed opinions at recent public‑comment meetings. Diana Flores Uriegas, an elderly resident on a fixed income, warned, “We don’t want to pay no more,” noting she must save each month to cover her annual tax bill.

Other residents expressed support. Sara, another homeowner, said, “I think it’s a good idea because San Antonio is pretty good about what they do with the taxes.” She added that taxpayers who feel their property values aren’t reflected fairly should consider protesting.

Antonio Diaz opposed the increase, pointing to the San Antonio Spurs’ relocation as evidence that the city can afford to fund large projects without raising taxes. “If our city has enough money to give to billionaires, why should we, the average taxpayer, have our property taxes increased?” he asked.

Budget timeline

The budget has not yet been adopted. City Council is scheduled to vote on the spending plan on Sept. 17, with a final approval deadline of Sept. 27. A second public‑comment session on the tax proposal is set for Sept. 10.

Residents who wish to voice their opinions are encouraged to attend the upcoming meetings or submit written comments to the city’s budgeting office.
