Tick Bite ER Visits Surge, Raising Concerns About Lyme Disease

Emergency room visits related to tick bites have surged to their highest seasonal levels since 2017, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Tick Bite Tracker. This rise is causing concern about the spread of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.

Increased Risk Across Age Groups

Children under 10 and adults between 70 and 79 years old are experiencing some of the highest rates of tick-related ER visits. Dr. Steven Goldberg, a family medicine physician in Louisville, Kentucky, notes that the geographic range of the blacklegged tick has expanded significantly over the past three decades, increasing the risk of Lyme disease and other infections.

Regional Concerns and Climate Impact

The Ohio River Valley region, including states like Virginia and West Virginia, has seen a notable increase in Lyme disease cases. The lone star tick is also expanding its range, bringing diseases like ehrlichiosis and alpha-gal syndrome to new areas. Climate changes, such as warmer and wetter conditions, are contributing to the spread of ticks into previously unsuitable habitats.

Prevention and Awareness

With no vaccines available for tick-borne diseases in the U.S., prevention remains the most effective strategy. Dr. Goldberg emphasizes the importance of early detection and treatment based on symptoms and exposure history, as testing can sometimes be falsely negative early in the disease process.

Common symptoms of tick-borne illnesses include fever, chills, fatigue, headaches, muscle aches, and the classic “bullseye” rash associated with Lyme disease. Individuals should seek medical attention if they develop symptoms after a known tick bite or after spending time in tick-prone areas.
