Photographer Greg Brennan Clarifies Misunderstood Kate Moss Photo

In 2007, photographer Greg Brennan captured an iconic image of supermodel Kate Moss that has since been widely misunderstood. The photo, taken at the bottom of a fire exit in London, shows Moss in a fur coat with a cigarette in hand. Contrary to popular belief, Brennan asserts that Moss was sober at the time, and the image was not a result of a wild night out.

Setting the Record Straight

Brennan’s new book, ‘The Big Shot,’ aims to correct misconceptions about the photo. He explains that the image was taken on Moss’ 33rd birthday, a night when she was under intense media scrutiny. Brennan was initially assigned to photograph Moss at The Dorchester hotel, but upon learning she was at Donmar Warehouse, he rushed across town. There, he found Moss sitting on the stairs, a moment he captured just before she left with musician Pete Doherty.

The photo quickly became emblematic of Moss’ so-called ‘party era,’ largely due to the sensationalist narratives spun by British tabloids. These outlets often portrayed Moss in a light of excess, especially following a 2005 drug scandal that threatened her career. Despite this, Brennan maintains that the image simply shows Moss at her best, not indulging in any debauchery.

A Misunderstood Era

Brennan’s account challenges the media’s portrayal of Moss during a time when female celebrities were frequently subjected to invasive coverage. He recalls how the tabloids exaggerated the circumstances, framing the image as evidence of a wild night, when in reality, it was a quiet moment of Moss waiting for a ride.

Despite the misconceptions, Brennan’s photo remains one of his most famous works. He reflects on the unexpected impact of the image, acknowledging that photographers often have little control over which of their works capture the public’s imagination. ‘The Big Shot’ offers readers a chance to see beyond the tabloid narratives and appreciate the artistry behind the lens.
