Tampa Advances Affordable Housing Initiatives Amid Rising Costs

Tampa, Florida, is taking significant steps to address the affordable housing crisis, with city leaders reporting substantial progress. Since 2019, the city has facilitated the creation of more than 8,300 affordable housing units, contributing to a total of over 23,000 new housing units built during this period.

Innovative Developments

Key developments such as Rome Yard, Marquee Square, and West River have been instrumental in this effort. Abbye Feeley, Development and Economic Opportunity Administrator, emphasized the need for creativity in identifying opportunities for housing projects. “The Rome Yard was a city lay down yard for 30 years,” Feeley noted, highlighting the innovative use of city-owned land for housing.

Addressing Rising Costs

Rising housing costs continue to challenge families across Tampa, particularly affecting longtime residents. City Council member Naya Young stressed the importance of ensuring that growth and opportunity include the existing communities. “Our goal is to create neighborhoods where growth and opportunity include the people who have always called these communities home,” Young stated.

Housing Stability Programs

Beyond new construction, Tampa’s efforts include programs to help residents remain in their homes. The city’s Rehabilitation and Renovation Program has rehabilitated over 150 homes since 2019, with 25 more currently in progress. This program recently assisted Carlton Mallard, whose family home from the 1950s received much-needed renovations, including a new roof and air conditioning.

City leaders plan to reopen applications for the Rehabilitation and Renovation Program this summer, continuing their commitment to housing stability for Tampa residents.
