The University of Florida is leading a statewide push to make artificial intelligence a core part of every discipline. Since 2022, the school has rolled out over 200 AI classes and certificate programs that are open to any student or faculty member, regardless of technical background.
Why AI belongs in every classroom
Provost Joseph Glover explained that limiting AI education to the computer‑science department would force every project to rely on an engineer. “We don’t think it’s appropriate or useful to relegate AI education to the College of Engineering,” he said. “When you want to use AI, you shouldn’t have to sit next to an engineer.”
Students are already putting the technology to work. Business senior Ethan Pecora uses a swarm of AI agents to manage his calendar, help with a mental‑wellness app, and even assist with coursework. While he calls the system a “second brain,” he prefers a less dystopian description.
Investment and infrastructure
The program’s early advantage came from a close relationship with Nvidia co‑founder Chris Malachowsky, a 1980 UF graduate who sits on the university’s Foundation Board. In 2018 he urged the Board of Trustees to develop an AI strategy, and a year later he and Provost Glover secured a $95 million investment that funded a high‑performance supercomputer called HiPerGator and the hiring of 100 new faculty members.
That funding allowed the university to embed AI tools in fields as diverse as hospitality, public health, geology, and dance. For example, geology professor Emma MacKie and her students used AI to model the topography beneath Antarctic ice, while dance majors trained chatbots to protect their choreography.
Sharing the model
In 2026 the university hosted an international AI‑in‑education summit, drawing nearly 500 participants from 10 countries and 40 U.S. states. Attendees exchanged lesson plans, discussed ethical considerations, and received a detailed blueprint for replicating UF’s approach at their own institutions.
“Pretty soon AI will be as ubiquitous as the internet,” said engineering professor Andrea Ramirez Salgado, who helped design the curriculum. “If you want to lead innovation, you need to understand what’s under the hood.”
Challenges and concerns
Despite the enthusiasm, some students and faculty voice unease. A rising senior, Tristan Robbins, stopped assigning homework in his class, opting for in‑class exams to curb AI‑assisted cheating. The university reported 66 AI‑related academic‑misconduct cases between fall 2021 and April 2025, up from none three years earlier.
Students also worry about AI’s impact on career prospects and the environment. MacKie noted that while AI can accelerate research, it also raises questions about originality and the carbon footprint of large‑scale computing.
Job market implications
Employers are demanding AI experience. The National Association of Colleges and Employers reported that more than one‑third of entry‑level job listings required AI skills in spring 2026, a three‑fold increase from the previous year. UF’s comprehensive curriculum aims to give graduates a competitive edge in that evolving market.
As the university continues to refine its approach, it hopes other schools will follow suit, ensuring that the next generation of Floridians—and Americans—are prepared for an AI‑driven economy.
