AI Adoption Drives Funding, Hiring and Confidence Gaps Among U.S. Startups

Founders across the United States are learning to adapt quickly, using new technology as a lever to navigate uncertain economic conditions. A recent survey of 1,500 early‑stage entrepreneurs conducted by Mercury, a fintech platform, reveals that heavy AI adoption has become the clearest dividing line in startup economics.

Confidence and Funding Split Along AI Lines

Overall, 84% of respondents said they felt more confident about their business prospects year over year. However, confidence diverged sharply: 91% of founders who reported significant AI use said their outlook improved, compared with just 60% of those who did not adopt AI.

When it comes to capital, the gap is even wider. While venture‑capital financing fell for most startups in 2025, AI‑heavy companies were more than four times as likely to secure VC money—31% versus 7% for non‑adopters. Moreover, AI adopters who closed a VC round were twice as likely to raise at least $1 million (72% versus 35%). Self‑funding was the only source that grew year over year, rising from 61% to 65% of respondents.

Hiring Trends Favor AI Users

Contrary to headlines that warn AI will eliminate jobs, the survey shows a different picture. Among AI‑using firms, 56% are hiring more staff because of AI, and another 38% say AI has helped them keep hiring plans steady. In total, 94% of AI adopters reported a neutral or positive hiring impact.

When asked about hiring junior talent (employees with 0‑3 years of experience), 26% said they are hiring more, 56% said hiring is about the same, and only 10% said they are hiring less. Overall, 82% of AI‑using startups are maintaining or increasing junior‑level hires.

Cost Pressures and ROI

AI adoption does bring added expense. Seventy‑seven percent of respondents said their AI and token spend rose over the past year, most commonly by 25‑50%. A small slice of heavy users (4%) reported cost increases of 200% or more. Still, 85% of founders said AI tools delivered better return on investment than traditional alternatives, and 87% believe they can sustain current AI capabilities without raising prices or cutting elsewhere.

Nevertheless, 65% expressed concern that a vendor‑related disruption—such as a price hike, contract change, or shutdown—could significantly harm their business. Nearly a third (29%) said more than half of their AI reliance rests with a single vendor, and heavy adopters were three times as likely to be very concerned about this risk.

Operational Impact Beyond Funding

AI tools are now embedded in daily operations. Ninety‑five percent of surveyed companies reported using AI agents, primarily for data analysis and reporting (52%), marketing (49%) and customer support (48%). Companies with over 100 employees all reported deploying AI agents.

Beyond operational efficiency, AI is influencing strategic decisions. Fifty‑seven percent said the availability of AI tools factored into their decision to leave a previous job and start their own company. Among founders of companies with $10 million‑plus revenue, 31% said AI made launching their business possible.

What This Means for the Startup Landscape

The data suggest that AI is not just a buzzword but a decisive competitive advantage. Startups that embrace AI are attracting more capital, expanding their workforces and reporting higher confidence, while those that lag behind face tighter funding and slower growth. The pattern holds across confidence, hiring, and cost management, indicating a fundamental shift in the economics of starting a company.

Founders who can balance the benefits of AI with the risks of vendor dependence appear best positioned to thrive in the evolving market. As AI tools become more affordable and accessible, the divide between AI‑heavy and AI‑light startups may widen further, reshaping the entrepreneurial ecosystem for years to come.
