Chicago Reports First West Nile Death of 2026 Amid Record Summer Rain

Chicago health officials announced the first West Nile virus death in Illinois for 2026, marking a sobering reminder of the risks posed by mosquito‑borne illnesses. The Chicago Department of Public Health also reported the city’s first two human cases of the disease, following the Cook County Department of Public Health’s report of four cases in the suburbs.

Rainy summer fuels mosquito growth

Chicago experienced its rainiest summer in years, with Midway Airport recording more than 20 inches of rain from June 1 to early August—well above the typical 13 inches. “2026 has seen the rainiest summer in Chicago in years, giving mosquitoes ample opportunities to breed,” said Department of Public Health Commissioner Garth Walk in a news release. He urged residents to take steps to prevent mosquito bites and eliminate breeding sites around their homes.

Public‑health response

City crews have sprayed insecticide in 15 community areas, including Beverly, Burnside, Chatham, East Garfield Park, Lower West Side, Morgan Park, Near West Side, North Lawndale, O’Hare, Pullman, Roseland, South Deering, Washington Heights, West Lawn, and West Pullman. In addition, more than 80,000 catch basins are being treated with larvicide to target immature mosquitoes.

How West Nile spreads and who is at risk

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, not from person to person. Most infected individuals experience no symptoms; about one in five develop fever and flu‑like symptoms, and severe illness occurs in roughly one in 150 cases, primarily among those over age 60.

Protecting yourself and your family

Officials recommend using EPA‑registered insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Residents should eliminate standing water weekly—emptying containers such as flowerpots, gutters, pet dishes, and birdbaths—and keep grass and weeds trimmed. Wearing loose‑fitting, light‑colored clothing, long sleeves, and using screens on windows and doors can further reduce exposure.

Illinois Department of Public Health Director Sameer Vohra called the death “a sobering reminder to take mosquito‑borne illness seriously,” emphasizing the importance of community vigilance.
