Clemson coach Dabo Swinney calls NFL players returning to college football “embarrassing”

In a candid pre‑game interview ahead of Clemson’s season‑opening clash with No. 11 LSU, head coach Dabo Swinney labeled the notion of former NFL players returning to college football as “embarrassing.” Swinney, whose program is set to meet LSU on Saturday night, said the sport has been stuck in this confusing era for far too long.

Coaches weigh in on the controversy

Swinney’s remarks join a growing chorus of college football leaders who question the NCAA’s recent moves to allow ex‑pros to suit up again. He noted, “It’s a joke where we’re at in college football… I never thought I’d be living in an era like this.” While he expressed sympathy for players seeking another chance after being cut from NFL rosters, he stressed the need for consistent governance.

Lane Kiffin, LSU’s first‑year head coach, has already welcomed former Cleveland Browns tight end Dae’Quan Wright to practice, though the NCAA’s acclimatization protocol keeps Wright from playing this week. Kiffin defended his approach, saying his decisions are made “in the best interest of the players that sit in this team room and not for my reputation.” He added that if college athletes are compensated like professionals, schools should be free to add late‑season roster additions, calling it “how the real world works.”

Other voices on the issue

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian called it “morally wrong” to replace a college student with a former NFL player, while Northwestern’s David Braun echoed Swinney’s call for a clear, common‑sense roadmap for the sport.

Beyond the NFL‑return debate, the NCAA is also facing legal challenges from players seeking an extra year of eligibility under the new “5‑in‑5” rule that limits members of the high school class of 2022. Former Notre Dame defensive lineman Junior Tuihalamaka is expected to be available for LSU against Clemson as part of that dispute.

Impact on the Clemson‑LSU matchup

Despite the surrounding controversy, Swinney said his focus remains on his own team. “I’m not really worried about it,” he said. “Our focus is on us. That’s really all that matters.” He added a light‑hearted jab about former Clemson running back Adam Randall, now with the Baltimore Ravens, noting, “Maybe if they would’ve waived him, we could’ve gotten Adam back. That would’ve been nice.”

The game promises to be a showcase of top‑tier college football, but it will also serve as a litmus test for how the sport navigates the growing debate over former professionals re‑entering the collegiate ranks.
