Dallas Transfers Land for Veterans’ Tiny Home Village

In a significant move to support veterans experiencing homelessness, the Dallas City Council has unanimously approved the transfer of city-owned land for the development of a tiny home village. The land, located across from the Dallas VA Medical Center in southern Dallas, will be used by the Veterans Community Project to create the Veterans Village at Patriots Crossing.

Supporting Veterans in Need

The Veterans Community Project, a nonprofit organization founded by Marine veteran Bryan Meyer, aims to build 50 tiny homes along South Lancaster Rd., along with a community center. Meyer emphasized the importance of helping veterans regain stability and transition back into the community.

“Get these veterans back on their feet, and then transition them back out into the community,” Meyer stated. The organization already operates similar villages in Kansas City and Colorado, providing transitional housing for veterans regardless of their discharge status. While veterans do not pay rent, they are required to participate in case management services to address issues that contributed to their homelessness.

Community and Government Support

Dallas City Council member Jaime Resendez highlighted the project’s potential to offer stability and support for veterans. “A place where veterans can find stability, access services, rebuild connections and begin the next chapter of their lives with dignity,” Resendez said.

Before construction can commence, the nonprofit needs to raise approximately $4 million. Council member Maxie Johnson expressed optimism about securing the necessary funding, noting interest from Dallas’ philanthropic community to help meet the estimated $15 million cost.

Vietnam veteran Willie Ferrell, a frequent visitor to the nearby VA hospital, expressed his support for the development, noting the land’s long-standing vacancy and the convenience it would offer to veterans without transportation.
